Question about 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

My 2001 malibu shuts off while driving. The theft system comes on and the car will not turn over. It takes many many tries to get it started. It's not the battery of the alternator. I haad both of them checked.

sometimes the cars anti theft can shut down the starter and/or the injectors. This might be your problem, especially after changing the ignition this problem is more common. The ignition is part of the antitheft security system. Check out this link for info and solutions. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

My theft system keeps activating and thus disabling the my 2003 Malibu for 10 minutes while I wait to reset. Can this be solved or is there a way to disable the system?

cant be disabled. I would have the dealer or a good repair shop diagnose and recommend repairs. Could be key or the lock cylinder/ sensor problem

Passlock warning light stops car from starting theft sysem

Try unhooking the battery2_bing.gif for about 3-5minutes. I have a 2001 malibu that does the same thing. When you hook up the battery and turn the key forward you should see the gauges return to normal before you try to crank the engine. It may also be the theft system. To reset that you have to turn the key forward for 10 minutes and then shut it off for 10 seconds. Then try again to start the car. It may take up to 3 attempts at this. Which means sitting in the parking lot for over a half hour. Been there done that. GM sucks.

Anti theft system on my 2000 malibu goes off when driving

Its your ignition switch. Its not recognizing when you turn it to the start position. The little terminals inside the switch get burned and wear down. When mine went out, the whole power to the dash would flicker, even cut out when driving. I actually wired my system to 1 toggle switch for on and off, I kept the anti theft wires attached to the switch. I also have a starter switch, if I fail to turn the key like I'm trying to start the car, the theft light comes on and the car dies right after starting.

Theft system 2000 malibu ls

try this: turn key on, crank starter for 1 second, leave key on for 10 minutes. after 10 min. shut key off and repeat 3 times. (on second try, crank a sec. or so longer, the reprogram may take off right away. if not, repeat make sure battery is strong, key could be on for 1/2 hr. sometimes engaging emergency brake before key is turned on prevent daytime running lites to come on to save battery power (if equipped). been through it, thought i'd mention it

Can you bypass theft system

No, I think he has the same problem I do. I have a stock 99 malibu...no real theft system. Usually after it rains or gets cold, a "theft system" light comes on in my dash. I can be driving, and the light will come on. If I turn the car off, I cannot restart the vehicle till about 20 minutes have passed and the light finally goes off. Sometimes this light comes on when I try to start the car in the morning. I put the key in the ignition, and the car will not start for 20 minutes till the darn theft system light goes off. From what I gathered, the theft system issue has something to do with a "passlock II" defect. I have no idea what this is, all I know is that I can't get a mechanic to listen to me, because the issue never repeats itself when I go to a garage. It gets a little annoying, but I've learned to deal with it.

Malibu won't start

This sound different again, I am thinking, since there is a valve (controlled by on board theft system) to shut off the fuel that there is the problem area, but just dirt, you know, the usual stuff.
I do know that car runs very shortly if theft system kicks in, maybe it kicked in but valve does not quite close?
Make sure you do your 10 minute routine to disable the theft system
