Question about 1998 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

1998 Toyota Corolla, automatic. I have trouble starting my car. When the key is engaged to the start position sometimes I just get a click. I have checked the battery w/ a hydrometer and have cleaned the battery terminals. Sometimes, if I jiggle the automatic gear shift while in Park the car will start. 1) Does the car have a neutral safety switch and if so, where is it located and what's the easiest way to replace it? 2) Are the ignition switch and the neutral safety switch the same thing, if not, then where and how do you replace the ignition switch? 3) The location and easiest way to change the starter? 4) Any other suggestions? Thanks, Nat

  1. I tried to find a
Toyota Corolla Wiring Diagram 1998 |
If you go to your library you can look for free. Just not sure of location of of neutral safety switch for your year of car. In the back of motor manual is wire diagrams you will find switch there. Also GEO Prism is the same car.
  2. The last time I worked on a Prism it was a 1997 I found a bad wire connection at the shifter. Took 20 minutes to do repair and no parts.
  3. So I would check the switch in your console. Sometime they stick or a wire comes loose. Sometimes a little WD-40 shot to the switch helps.

if it is totally dead then it could be in your park neutral safety switch, check underneath where the clutch is housed and push in with your hand and see if it engages

How do you rplace an ignition lock cylinder on a 98 toyota corolla

You can do this one yourself if you want it does not require removing the steering wheel. just the plastic housing from the steering column.
remove housing/cover. then look at housing with cylinder lock assem. on bottom about 1.2 inches or so from the end of the lock assembly you will see a very small hole insert metal pin into hole and push in while turning the key in the ignition backwards to accessory positionyou will feel the pin your pushing move in a bit, then you should be able to pull the cylinder assembly out. insert new assembly with key in the same position and turn forward this will install your new assemlby then reassemble your plastic column covers.

Remove the starter & inspect the contacts inside the starter solenoid housing. If they are burnt and/or worn, you will get this condition. Replace the contacts and the plunger, or replace the starter. I change contacts in my shop 3-4 times a week. Quite a common failure. The clicking noise is the plunger hitting one contact, but not the other, due to wear.
