You can do this job. but you must get a repair manual for this car, you cannot do the job with out it. follow the directions to the letter. especially when it comes to setting timing marks. very critical. check and check again. if it not right you can damage the engine. good luck. ps you can get this done at a shop for about $650.00

SOURCE: need to know about changing the timing belt on my 2001 mitsubishi

This will take about 3-4 hours. If you look at the drive belts, they will all have to be taken off to get to the timing belt. The engine crankshaft has to be positioned for marks to line-up. The crankshaft will have to be prevented from turning so you can take off its drive pulley. Rotate until the alignment cylinder is near TDC, remove sparkplug, then packing a small rope on top of the piston prevents the engine from turning.. Once you change one timing belt, you will never buy another car with a timing belt again. You can get a manual on eBay.

How do replace the water pump in a 2001 mitsubichsi galant

You have to take off the the steering pump belt, alternator belt, upper engine belt cover , support the motor, take off the right motor mount, take off the lower engine belt cover, take off the timing belt, and take off the water pump belt to get access to the water pump. Then be sure to put on all new belts when reassembling.

How do you change the alternater belt on a 2001 Galant?

My apologies for the delayed response. I am going back to answer unanswered questions.
1. Yes, you have to take the other belt off to take this belt off.
2. I use a wire brush to get melted rubber out of the grooves on pulleys with grooves. I use a wire brush then sand paper to remove melted rubber of smooth pulleys.
3. You should always replace both belts instead of just one.

How do i replace the water pump for a 2001 mitsubishi galant?

This is a very complicated process, as you have to remove the timing belt. If you are not very mechanically inclined, and do this yourself you could cause complete engine failure as the engine timing is very critical. This is known as a "interference engine" meaning that the pistons WILL hit the cylinder valves, either bending them or punching holes in the pistons if the engine timing belt is not replaced in the exact position that it needs to be. You could opt to check out a repair manual to give yourself an idea of how complicated this is. They are available at any auto parts store for about $20.
