Have the battery tested. Auto Zone will do it for free. If it comes back good, clean both connections, battery and wire ends. Check ignition fuse as well. It will be a large one

Test the batteryno starter response - 2_bing.gif first(make sure it's charged 100%)
There is single wire , not a fat cable , on the starter ,
disconnect it , then use test light , connect it to that wire on one side and ground on the other side.
Turn ign. key to start position and watch the light , if it's on - starter is bad , if it's off - ignition switch no good.

My truck want start even using jumper cables. I put the key in and all the lights, radio and the AC work fine but when I turn the key, nothing. No clicking or anything. Is there a fuse or something simple...

  • I would check your starter. You obviously have some juice but no response from the starter. The fact that jumper cable are not working leads me to believe your starter needs replaced. Starters don't always "click click click click" when they go bad. Often you get no response at all. If you test the things I stated below then I would pull the starter and see if putting direct DC power to it gets any response. I am betting you will get none.

  • Of course you want to check the battery connections and the battery cables. Make sure the copper braids have not rotted inside the insulation. Check the connections at the starter as well.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Intermittently having trouble starting when turning the key no response at all.

May be immobilizer circuit, or, on a 14-year-old car, it could be the starter.
When you get no response, have someone tap the starter with a stick. If that makes it work, it is shot.
I have heard that if you have a manual transmission, you can snake out the starter without removing the intake manifold. Not clear to me how that would help. On an automatic, you have to remove the intake manifold. PITA, but then you will know that you have a nice fresh intake manifold gasket.

1996 Saturn SL2 - No response from starter - over past 3 days it has been intermitant - all lights from ignition switch but no response from starter - In 100 attempts, it has started 3 times - Battery is...

It would be hard to guess but a simple diagnostic would be to use a 12v test light and see if the starter solenoid recieves a 12 v signal while turning the key. If it lights, the starter should turn over. This also gives you the oportunity to check and verify all electrical connections at the starter including the large orange fusible link wire at the large battery terminal.

Sunfire gt 97 2.4L. car won't start, small

sounds like a starter solenoid went bad which it is easier to replace the whole starter assembly then just the solenoid and you can get one with a LLT Limited Life Time warranty.
