Your blend door is not operating properly. The blend door directs the air where it is supposed to go based on the settings you tell it, vent, defrost, floor, etc.

If you want to find out if the blend door is working, open the glove box. If you squeeze the sides the glove box door will drop down. Take a flashlight and look towards the top inside the glove box. You will see a mesh type opening, while looking inside the mesh switch the a/c switch from max to defrost. If you do not see the blend door move you have a broken blend door. My estimates ran from $550 to $750 at local ford dealers. Blend door itself runs between $60 and $70.

2002 ford explorer AC and heat blowing in dash, but very weak from the vents

On the motorcraft parts web site, you can blow up
a picture of the HVAC Blend Door Motors & locations,
as well as part numbers

You can get failed motor from Amazon

With knowing where the motors are located, try switching
the air flow modes manually, to see what positions do not work

Then you know what motors to replace

I also have professional scan tool software & can see the codes
for the motors in enhanced data.

The-- Vent Blend Doors-by name

Defrost-up top
Cabin -the vents as you say in the middle & on the sides
Recirculate-under the glove box

A/c blows out defroster vents only on my 2002 ford explorer

Airflow goes into one main duct in dash and is redirected to the appropriate vents selected by the fan control switch on your dash. The shutter is controlled by cable attached to the back of the climate control unit. The problem, if the shutter or control switch, should be the same regardless of AC or Heat selection. The shutter is either stuck open or the cable has broken to control it. If the fan direction control switch is hard to turn and offers resistance or just the opposite it has too much free-play the cable is the culprit and is stuck or broken. If there is resistance it could be the shutter stuck and its within the dash. that is a bit more intricate to get fixed as you have to access the shutter by removing the dash.

2002 explorer a/c blowing out of defrost and not dash vents

The direction of the air flow (dash/defrost/floor, etc) is controlled by vacuum going to the switch. There may be a vac line that didn't get connected or was damaged when they put the replacement engine in it. Check the lines on the firewall to make sure nothing is loose.

2005 explorer only blows ac out defrost vents why? everything works, just won't switch off defrost.

Defrost is the default position, The control head is most likely electronic on this model, the actuators that switch the modes are little electric motors. There was an issue with the plastic doors that direct airflow, they would break and jamb. If the control head were to be the older style that uses vacuum then I would say that you have lost vacuum to the inside of the vehicle. If this is the case look for a broken vacuum hose coming to or through the firewall, ususlly on the passenger side under the hood close to the HVAC pipes/lines in the firewall.
