It turns on and off the overdrive for the transmission if you are city driving or towing it should be off if you are highway driving it should be on, when its on it gives you another gear for better mileage when its off it drops down a gear to give you more power. I hope this helps you

Toyota harrier 98 model (OD off )check light on/off. Why?OD means over drive?

There should be a small pushbutton switch on your shifter, either on the center of the knob if it has the shifter on the steering wheel or if its on the center console, it should be to the side of the release button that you press when switching from park to drive. It means Over Drive is off and that will not allow to engage the last gear when driving. This is useful when hauling a heavy trailer but not good when driving normally cause it may cost you more fuel economy

Light indicating 'o/d off' just came on. No other problems.thanks jim L

Hello, welcome to FIxYa.

The OD Off light has been activated by someone moving the small square button on the side of the shifter. This button allows the OD to engage, or is prevented (OD Off). To rectify this, depress the button on the side of the shifter.

I hope that my assistance proves beneficial to you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

My son press some of the buttons and it displays "O/D OFF". please tell me how to turn on O/D. Early response would highly appreciated. REgards Jacob Francis

Hello, welcome to FixYa. Please allow us to assist you.

The OD OFF light has been turned on via the small square button on the side of the shifter handle. This button should normally be in the 'depressed' position, which allows the OD to engage. The OD OFF light is illuminated on the inst panel to alert you that the OD has been manually disengeged. The OD is the final shift of the transmission, thusly giving you maximum fuel mileage.

To rectify this, press the button on the side fo the shifter handle.

I have a 94 4runner and I ran the diagnostic and its a 42 code for the OD/off and engine 42. It doesn't shift into over drive sometimes and it'll blink OD/off every now and then, and the speedometer...

Hi,

Code #42 on the 4Runner denotes a problem with the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit.

It means the ECM did not detect a signal from the VSS, above 2,200rpm....which might explain the speedo issue - Does your speedo play up, only when engine running above 2,200rpm or 2,700rpm?

Areas to check (in this order) are:

- Open (or short) in the VSS circuit
- faulty VSS sensor
- ECM fault within VSS circuit

Cheers,

Sounds like a n electrical shift actuator is at fault. It would be located on the transfer ccase. Make sure the fuse isn't blown and the wiring is connected at the case.

The "O/D"

it is the overdrive sign for your transmission. look around the shifter even on it and you will see a button that has O/D on it. press this button and the light will turn off im guessing since its on now. you want o/d when on the freeway it cuts the work of the tranny in halfand saves gas and where and tear on your drivetrain

Does anyone know what the orange arrow light means on the instrument panel of an older volvo sedan?

Means the overdrive is disengaged. There should be a button on the side of the shifter. If pressing this does not engage the OD, then you may need to replace the OD solenoid.

What are these buttons for? e t c drive & side of shifter

The ETC switch is a transmission control device. When it is not active, the transmissions shifts normally. When the ETC is engaged, it alters the shift points.
Example: the 1-2 upshift occurs normally between 18-20 mph. Now, say you are towing something, or are carrying a heavy load...engage the ETC, and the trans computer will "hold" the 1-2 upshift until 22-24 mph. It is just for that, prolonging the shift points, due to load.

The switch on the side of the shifter is for the Overdrive. Engaged (the OD light is off) the transmission shifts into overdrive. This saves you gas. When the button is dis-engaged (the OD OFF light is on) , the transmission does NOT shift into overdrive. It is best to leave the overdrive ON, and the ECT OFF to obtain maximum fuel mileage. I hope this has answered your question. Please feel free to comment back if you have any other questions. Thanks for chosing FixYa for assistance.
