You need to determine the location of the leak and then charge. There is a low coolant sensor that will tell the clutch no to kick in so it does not burn it up.

What is the noise when the air conditioner is runing sounds like a switch going on AND OFF

Its the air compressor kicking on and off. If your air is cool, its normal. If it just keeps going off and on alot, you may need to have your air conditioning charged. (freon)

99 Dodge Grande Caravan the A/C blows hot air and a hissing sound under dash

Well the hissing sound could be a vac leak or the freon flowing thru the system.
Someone needs to check the freon charge in the system with a gauge and the electrical circuit to the compressor clutch.

Sounds like you got a leak all right Check compressor clutch as well Motor revs should fluctuate when compressor cuts in and out Could be the seals in the compressor as well You need to find where the hissing noise is coming from

Air conditioner doesn't run.

it is the low pressure switch trying to save the compressor. the system is low on refrigant. on this ford it should be R-134a all new cars are that refrigant.

Chevy 2001 2500hd, sounds like a air leak when running the air conditioner. someone told me it was a belt on the air conditioner that was causing the air leak sound.

FREON ENTERING THE EVAPORATOR WILL SOUND LIKE AN AIR LEAK. THE ORIFICE CAN SOUND LIKE ITS HISSING.

HAVE A SERVICE CENTER CHECK THE ORIFICE TUBE, MAY NOT BE INSTALLED PROPERLY.

Air conditioner not blowing cold after recharge last year

david_simko: based on your description above, it definitely sounds like you have a leak somewhere in your A/C system. If you re-charged your A/C system last year, you should still have plenty of freon (R134-a) coolant in your A/C system. If you are familiar with how the A/C system works on your vehicle, there are two products you can use to help you identify leak in your A/C system. The first is a liquid that you inject into the system. This liquid will come out (in a solid color) in the area(s) of where the leak is accruing. The second device is a electronic freon sniffer. This is a small hand held device with about a 10" antenna on it. This device electronically "sniffs" for freon, and leads you to the area of where freon is leaking. Since you've stated that you re-charged your A/C system last year, and since has degraded from cold air, to warm and now hot air, you will have to (at minimum) partially recharge your A/C system to use one of the two leak detection methods I have mentioned above. PLEASE VOTE FOR THIS REPLY IF YOU HAVE FOUND THIS INFORMATION HELPFUL. Thank you.

2003 forester - there is water leaking in the front passenger side floor when the air conditioner is running. sometimes a hissing sound also in the same area.

You need to clear the condenstate drain for the AC evaporator core, it is under the car, as far as the hissing, sounds like a vacuum leak, look for a disconnected small hose around the area of the noise.
