I have a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic. I've taken her to the shop twice in the past 2 weeks and they say nothing's wrong. The temperature meter stays too far to the right, almost to the orange "hot" spot. What could be wrong? I even looked under the hood myself last night and the engine was so hot that I couldn't touch it, but the tank that holds the engine coolant was, so I check that this morning and there's about 2 inches of fluid in there. Yes, I'm a girl.
Could be one of the cooling fans. Turn your A/C on while hot and check to see if both cooling fans fans are running.
It could be that the thermostat is not opening to alow flued to cerculate through the whole coling system, when u start the car the thermostate stay's closed to healp it warm up faster, it open's mecanicly at a pre set temputure, if it doesent open the water pump can't cerculate the collant and the engin will run hot but might not over heat untill pushed hard while pulling a hill or a full load of friend's, it's normaly a cheap thing to replace, and the shop shoulden't charge more than a couple hour's labore on that car to do the repair! hope this healp's
