I have had my engine out (1991 Cougar 5.0), and I did it separately. I do not think both could be removed at the same time with a conventional engine hoist. It is a pain separating them. Be sure to replace the rear main seal!!

My 1997 ford thunderbird stalls, idles rough, backfires, and has trouble accelerating

it could be as simple as your spark plugs, they may need to be checked for proper gaping and also check to make sure plugs are installed properly, could also be your timing might be off, could also be the throttle position sensor, these could all be effecting the fuel to air ratio, I would start with the easiest problem 1st......hope this was of some use to you.....

Do i have to remove my timing belt in order to replace my water pump in my 1997 ford thunderbird lx its a 4.6 v8

Your car use3s a timing chain not a belt. The water pump will be serviced by first removing the serpentine belt and then removing the water pump pulley and then finally removing the water pump. It is a fairly easy pump to replace.

If you have any further question please ask I I will be happy to help.
