It could just be a partially stuck thermostat if your not losing any antifreeze. if you have white steam out the tailpipe then a headgasket or head problem is likely. dont keep driving this till you fix it because if its simple now its going to be a major fix later as you will damage the engine etc.

I have a 02 Grand caravan that has new radiator, termostat, one new fan. the temp gauge goes up to max hot the drops right back down in seconds. what could be the problem?

it could be you have an air lock in the cooling system
remove the rad cap from the rad, start the engine and let it run until the coolant drops (add to fill it back up) or until the coolant boils out of the rad spout.

maybe pull the heat sensor. -replace it OR clean it off, reinstall it.

Check coolant level indicator on cadillac deville 2005 still on

After changing the thermostat you might have developed an air lock in the radiator. Does the radiator knock or push antifreeze out with the car running and the cap off. The water pump should also be checked and you can do that by looking in the radiator while running and with the cap off. You should see the fluid moving through the radiator if it is circulating Just be careful not to get burned if it pushes water out of the radiator.

91 Geo Storm Gsi running just fine, one day I lost power driving 65, check engine light came on and was flickering, mph arm going up and down but didn't die then. Then it was ok.That happened 2 times...

Most engines don't fair well under extreme heat. It's apparent you might have some electrical issue's. Your rpm's or mph arm going up and down could be faulty speed sensor would cause arm problem. I think you may have more than one problem, the car shutting off is due to engine over-heating. Check cooling system-thermostat, water pump, radiator, engine fans and coolant temp sensor and fan relay's. It could be as simple as blown radiator hose.

Overheating quickly after a few seconds of driving

1. OPEN THE BONET
2. OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP
3. CHECK THE FLUID INSIDE WHICH SHOULD BE UP TO THE NECK. IF NOT FILL IT WITH COOLANT .
4. START THE ENGINE AND IDLE (WARNING:- KEEP YOUR HANDS AND FINGERS AWAY FROM THE RADIATOR FAN SINCE IT START AUTOMATICALLY WHEN HEATED AND STOPS WHEN COOLS. ITS ALL AUTOMATIC)
5. SEE IF THE FLUID INSIDE THE RADIATOR IS GASSING OR EMITTING AIR BUBBLES. IF IT IS THEN YOU SHALL HAVE TO GET THE HEAD GASKET REPLACED WHICH HAS PROBABLY DAMAGED DUE TO HEATING. CHECK IF THERE IS ANY LEAKAGE AND THE RADIATOR HOSES ARE NOT LEAKY.
6. IF ALL THE ABOVE ARE OK THEN SHUT DOWN ENGINE CLOSE THE RADIATOR CAP CAREFULLY AND RESTART THE ENGINE CHECK RADIATOR FAN SHOULD START WHEN THE TEMPERATURE NEEDLE REACHES AT QUARTER OR MORE BUT NOT ABOVE THE HALF LEVEL. MONITER IT CLOSELY AND SHUT DOWN BEFORE THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE REACHES CLOSES TO RED.IF HOSE IS DAMAGED THEN GET A NEW ONE AND REPLACE WHEN THE ENGINE TI FULLY COOL DO NOT TRY WITH WARM ENGINE AS IT COULD BURN YOU.
TO REMOVE THE RADIATOR HOSE LOOSEN THE WIRE CLIP WITH THE HELP OF SCREW DRIVED AND PULL OFF THE DEFECTIVE HOSE FROM BOTH END IF YOU HAVE PROBLEM TRY WITH THE HELP OF A SMALL SCREW DRIVER NOT TO APPLY FORCE WHICH MAY DAMAGE THE NIZZLE.FOR LOWER SIDE HOSE YOU SHALL HAVE TO GO UNDERNEATH THE CAR AS THE RADIATOR LOWER HOSE IS NOT EASY TO REACH.

When it is very hot - 35 deg.C - and the van runs very well and suddenly it cuts out and does not want to start again until the engine cools down. It only happens from time to time and not on a regular...

Have you checked the coolant level? If it is low fill it up and check for leaks. Low coolant can cause the car to overheat and shut down. IF the coolant level is ok you could have a bad thermostat/sensor. Its job is to shut the car off if it thinks it is over heating.

First thing, check your rotor button. Sometimes the tip breaks on them, going to the side and won't allow it to start. If that's ok, check your timing chain. Good luck.
