Question about 2001 Volkswagen Passat
When using the turn signal, especially left turn, it triggers a spasm of clicking noises...then quits for a while only to return again. Some days it doesn't do it at all. Then returns with a vengence!
I had this same problem and the only way to fix it without sending a boat load of money is to stop by your local automotive store and buy some "Electrical contact cleaner". Spary it into the blinker lever hole on the steering column. use a lot and at every angle you can. this will solve.

The directional switch has a loose connection that causes the clicking noise. It sounds like a relay clicking on z& off I know. All you can do is to replace the directional switch to eliminate this noise
