Question about 1991 Honda Civic

2 Answers

My 91 honda civic has a problem starting sometimes. It starts in the morning. Sometimes it will not start on a hot day and it will just shut off while driving occaisionally. Often it must cool off before it will start after it has warmed up 20-30 minutes of running. Each time this happens there is a loud knocking sound while its trying to start.

It will be the main relay. It is a massive fuse under the coin tray. The joints become dry and need re-soldered. A very common problem on these cars.

The clunk is the starter engaging the flywheel, check that it is properly seated, a bolt might have come loose.

Sounds like a bad starter. if the sound ur hearing is coming from somewhere in the engine try getting ur starter tested at any automotive stores, shucks, napa, ect.

My 91 civic runs and drives good but sometimes i shut it off and it wont start back up 4 awhile and then i hear a click and it starts back up please help

check your solenoid on your starter, usually when it get hot it fail until it cool off. a sign of starter going bad if you have to wait til the starter cool off before you can restart the car again. also check contact to the starter. if you having problems getting the starter to work you can get a small hammer and lightly tap the starter, 90% of the time it will kick over.

Is the vehicle wanting to turn over? If not at all, look at the ignition switch, sometimes the contacts wear down and intermittant problems arise, such as not starting or car will die while driving.

91 honda civic

wont crank is sign of bad starter or bad battery or connections from positive fat cable to starter. or bad solenoid. or even relay that signals solenoid to engage. also if car shuts off and wont start but cracnks. it could be the pickup coils in distributor, not giving it signal to fire spark or alarm system bypassed wrong
