Have a 2002 Bonneville. It is difficult to start the car first thing. After a few attempts and stepping on the gas it will start and then run without any problems.

Hmm

1.) turn ignition on,, let it sit for 30 seconds
2.) switch ignition off
3.) start..

if it starts then your fuel pump is pushing enogh pressure ,, u will need to get it changed,,

if it doesnt check your oxygen sensor,, and engine coolant temperature,, both of these control the oxygen fuel mixture and chances are one if malfunctioning..

Tried the on-off-start and the car did not start. Also tried starting the car with the gas pedal right down to the floor and this also did not work. It did start, as it has for awhile now, by applying some gas just when the engine is catching on ignition. If you can catch it right and get the motor to run at the higher rpms for just a few seconds, it will then run fine at low idle, while driving and will also start up without any problems during the day. At this time, it only seems to be an issue when the car has sat for many hours.

There are many possibilities That you will have to check out. It could be a bad sensor preventing the IAC valve or air / fuel ratio from being set correctly... It could be a stuck or burned out IAC valve... Could be a clogged fuel filter, air leak or other fuel problem... Could be a bad wire, fuse or dirty connector somewhere... 1) Bad motor mount. 2) Weak spark. 3) low fuel pressure. 4) Also check the fuel. 5) Also check the connection between battery terminal  and starter terminal. The battery of the car is connected to the starter. When you insert the key in the ignition switch of the car and turn it on at that time battery receives command and battery sends command to starter to start the car.but if this connection between battery and starter is loose or weak then car will take time to start . This all the above mentioned possibilities has to be checked. Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Thanks, I will assess a few of the items pointed out. A previous suggestion was to assess the fuel pump by turning on the car for thirty seconds, shutting it off and then starting it to see if it would go. Comment being if it started that the fuel pump was shot and if it did not then should consider the o2 sensor or engine coolant temp sensor. The results of the on-off-on are noted below as well as a couple of other notes on how the car has been staring/running.

Car no start problem is sometimes very difficult to confirm. You try all the possible things, but still you get no fault and problem is still the same.--------
In that case, you need to check few things individually.
Check the spark, the battery, the crank, the fuel and other most possible parts. Click this link below for more details:-- http://howtobyme.blogspot.com/2011/10/car-troubleshooting-tips.html

Fuel pump pressure valve? Car won't start right away.

Try changing the fuel filter before you do anything drastic. The fact that your car starts better when the tankis full leads me to believe the tube in the gas tank has a hole in it or has come apart somewhat. It could be sucking air.
It's not terribly difficult to change the fuel pump. It's mostly dirty and difficult, because you have to remove the gas tank. And those silly little pumps are pricey. The easiest cheapest fix is to go to an auto wrecker and get the whole gas tank, with the pump still in it. Don't be afraid of used parts. You drive to the parts store on them all the time.
