Go to any auto parts and they will do a battery, alternator and starter test for free, but it sound like your alternator has gone bad. Battery light means your alternator is not putting out voltage to run all your elec. and keep the battery charged up. you can also test the alternator your self, if you have a volt meter, with engine running check voltage at battery that will be alternator out put, should have no less then 13.5 volts, if less bad alternator.

This is caused by a failing alternator. Kragen auto and Autozone tests these for free.

Check that the alternator is charging the battery up,,, i would say its packed up on you,,,dont keep boost charging you car battery up,,this make's it get very hot and you will kill off the battery as well like that,,
you only charge a battery at whats called the c10 rate,,,,ie: amp hours devided by amps??? now your lost hu? ok, a 50 amp hour battery needs only 5 amps to charge it up but it takes 10 hours to fully charge it,,,,(at best charg rate) leave it on a 5 amp charge all day if i was you!

My car starts only when boosted

Measure the voltage across the car battery with a volt meter with the alternator running .. It needs to read 13.4 volts or higher to charge the battery.

I have a 97 escort, it has been sitting for a while so when i went to start it, no battery charge. Once i boosted it, it ran no problem, if you turn car off and try to start again, no charge. I left...

The first thing to do would be to put the battery on a slow or trickle charge for about 24 hours. It may be worn down enough from sitting that it needs to be revitalized. This should do it if the battery is still good. While it is charging, clean up all your cable ends and terminals to bare shiny metal. Do the battery, starter and alternator and the grounds in the engine compartment. Once the battery is charged up try it again. If the car will only start once or try to start once and need to be boosted, you will need a new battery. If it starts and runs repeatedly, then get the output checked on the alternator. A new one should charge at 14-14.5 volts but as long as it shows better than 12 volts it should be okay. Also when you are testing it, turn all your accesories on, radio, heater, A/C operate power accessories and watch to see how the alternator handles the load. The needle on your meter will bounce a little but should come back to where it was. If it doesn't then you will need to replace it as well. Hope this helps.

Battery warning light comes on while engine running and car died ans was able to be boosted off, and battery and alternator check out ok. Is it an electrical short?

It definetly could be but I would check the connection to the battery. There is a positive wire that runs from the altrenator to the battery. That wire may not be connected or may be corroded. Clean it really good with a wire brush and look at the quality of the wire. Also clean the battery posts and connections. If the battery and altrenator are good it is probably a bad wire or loose connection

Car starts, when you run it for a while its ok,then you come back later the car is dead, will not start, then you jump it, car starts again

Sounds like your battery has too many dead cells, or your alternator has gone.

After the car has been boosted, turn on the lights, heater, and stereo. If the car wants to die, press the accelerator slightly. If the car stays running, its your battery. If the lights flicker even with pressing the gas pedal, its most likely your alternator.

did it stay running when connected to the car giving the boost? if so then the alternator is not charging the electrical system, get it serviced or replaced.

Starts with boost then car dies after 1 km and won't start

once the car is started it runs off the alternator .. so even if your battery is bad the alternator will still run the car .. so it looks lilke your alternator is bad .. when you jumped the car you charged the battery a little but not enough to keep it going since the alternator is not charging . if you hook up a charger overnight then you might be able to run it long enough to get somewhere (garage) .. try to drive when you dont need lights .. those will run down the battery in a short time .. if you have a volt meter then the battery should read about 13.8 to 14.2 volts when the alternator is working properly (car running) .. if it reads lower (like 12volts or less) then the alternator is not charging .. some auto parts stores will test your system free ..
