Brake retaining pin threads stripped

The last mechanic to do a brake job stripped the threads on one of the caliper retaining pins, I contacted a few dealers to find out the thread size so i could re drill and put in a helicoil, but non of them could answer the question. I have been to 2 different retailers for helicoils and both sized them wrong, can anyone help me with the correct thread

Napa sell an oversize caliper bolt, for that same reason
the part number is #6751539 cost about $20.00 and it is a stocking item.

Yeah, do not ask the auto store retailer, just got stuck with a helicoil. Going for oversized guide pin.

One solution may be to go to an autostore and have them pull a caliper bolt from stock and check the fit in a nut or a thread guage.

    thanks...but 2 different stores both got it wrong and now i'm stuck with 2 sets of helicoils and 2 taps

Break bolts going into the caliper are stripped need to tap to a 14 mm thread. anyone know a car that uses 14 mm threads on their break pins

I would recommend either replacing the spindle with a salvage yard part that still has good threads, or installing an insert in the messed up one that you currently have. You try and just tap the hole larger and find a larger pin, the caliper probably will not fit over it anyway.

How to I change the rear brake pads on a 2001 Saturn LS. They are disc

Rear Disc Brakes Pads Removal & Installation L4-2.2L (Vin F) & V6-3.0L (Vin R) To Remove:
Ensure that vehicle is securely supported before lifting. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is not on a hoist provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from where components are being removed. Ensure that the lift does not contact fuel or brake lines.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheel and tire assemblies but do not remove the lug nuts
  3. Raise and support the vehicle
  4. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies
  5. Drive out the brake pad retaining pins from outside-to-inside then remove the pins and retaining spring sat_car_30_r_brk-pd_ret-pns.gif


  6. Remove the brake pads
  7. Inspect the following:
    • Brake pad retaining pins for deterioration or damage; replace as needed
    • Brake pad retaining spring for deterioration or damage; replace as needed
    • Brake caliper piston seal for leakage or damage; overhaul the caliper as needed
To Install:
NOTE: Never replace brake pads on one side of axle only. Left and right side brake pads must be replaced only as axle sets.
  1. Install the new brake pads onto the caliper
  2. Apply a small amount of silicone grease to the retaining pins NOTE: Check to ensure that the brake pads move freely in the guide.
  3. Install the brake pad retaining spring then drive the brake pad retaining pins in from inside outward sat_car_30_brk-pd-ret-sprngs.gif

    NOTE:Before installing the wheel and tire assemblies remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.
  4. Install the wheel and tire assemblies
  5. Lower the vehicle to the ground
  6. Torque the lug nuts as follows:
    • First Pass: Torque to 46 lb-ft. (63 Nm)
    • Second Pass: Torque to 92 lb-ft. (125 Nm)
    If this operation is not carried out brakes will not operate properly during initial brake applications.
  7. Prior to operating the vehicle depress the brake a few times until the brake pads are seated against the rotor

I need to replace the front brake pads on a 2005 Kia Rio. Is this simular to other cars or should i have an expert do it.

This worked for me.

1.Put front of vehicle on jack stands. Brace back wheels
2. Remove front wheel.
3. Using the C-Clamp squeeze the caliper so the piston goes back inside the caliper.
4. Using the 9/16 socket undo the 2 bolts that go through a rubber boot. There's one on the top of the caliper and the other one is the bottom of the [brake caliper. The reason I said not to use a deep socket is that the torsion bar link is kinda in the way so you can't fit a deep socket in there.
5. Once the 2 bolts are removed, remove the wire retaining clips. One wraps around the top pin that holds the brake pads together and the other clips onto the top and bottom pin. Remove the one that goes from the top pin to the bottom pin. You will not be able to take the other one out just yet.
6. Using your center punch or screw driver tap both pins out of the caliper. You will at this point be able to remove the other wire retaining clip.
7. At this point the caliper should be loose and you should be able to remove it. If you are just changing the brake pads then you're half way done. Replace old pads with new pads and reassemble in the reverse order.
8. If you are replacing the rotors as well then all you need to do is loosen both Phillips head screws that are holding the rotors to the hub. Be careful with the screws I happened to strip the head on one of these babies and let me tell ya it wasn't easy taking it out. Once the screws are removed the rotor should come right off. Might need a hammer to persuade it a little.

9. Install new rotor and brake pads and you are done.

It took me roughly 1 hour to do the brake job.
All in all it's a fairly straight foward brake job.

Removal & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  3. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly.
  6. Hand-tighten 2 wheel lug nuts in order to retain the rotor to the hub.
  7. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad.
  8. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the piston pushes into the caliper bore enough to slide the caliper off the rotor.
  9. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.

Front brake pads and related parts

  1. Remove the lower caliper bolt (1).

    WARNING Use care to avoid damaging pin boot when rotating caliper.

  2. In order to access the pads, rotate the caliper upward and suitably support it.
  3. Remove the pads (5) from the caliper bracket (3).
  4. Remove the 2 retainer slides (4) from the caliper bracket (3).
  5. Inspect all parts for cuts, tears, or deterioration. Replace any damaged parts.
  6. Inspect the caliper bolts for corrosion or damage. If corrosion is found, use new caliper bolts when installing the caliper.
To install:
  1. Using a C-clamp, bottom the piston into the caliper bore. Use an old brake pad or wooden block across the face of the piston. Do not damage the piston or the caliper boot.
Install the 2 retainers to the caliper bracket.

NOTE The wear sensor is on the outside pad. The sensor is positioned at the leading or upward edge of the pad during forward wheel rotation.

Install the pads to the caliper anchor bracket.

  1. Use care to avoid damaging pin boot when rotating caliper.

  1. Remove the support and reposition the caliper (2) back down over the front pads.
  2. Lubricate the pin bolt and the inner diameter of the bolt boot with GM P/N 18047666, or equivalent. Do not lubricate the threads of the pin bolt.
  3. Install the lower caliper bolt. Tighten the caliper bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  4. Remove the 2 wheel lug nuts retaining the rotor to the hub.
  5. Install the tire and the wheel assembly.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  8. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  9. Wait 15 seconds, then, repeat steps 10 and 11 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  10. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level.
  11. Burnish the pads and rotors.

How do I remove the front brakes? Is there a special tool?

prev.gif next.gif Some GM Vehicles use aT-30 Torx bit, other use a regular hex head bolt with a ratchet tor remove the caliper. The following shows how to remove the caliper from the line. Brake Caliper Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Hand tighten 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.
  6. Install a large C-clamp over the brake caliper with the ends of the clamp against the rear of the caliper body and the outer brake pad.
  7. Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed into the bore enough to allow the piston to slide past the rotor and remove the C-clamp.
  8. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and discard the two copper gaskets.
  9. Plug the brake line and the opening in the brake caliper. NOTE: On second design hardware, the upper caliper pin bolt has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt is of a solid design.
  10. Remove the caliper pin bolts and the caliper from the bracket.
To Install:
  1. Replace any damaged caliper pin boots.
  2. If reusing the brake caliper pin bolts, wipe the old grease from the brake caliper pin bolts.
  3. On first design hardware apply high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper pin bolts. On second design hardware, apply a thin coat of NIGLUBE® or equivalent grease to the brake caliper pin bolts. In either case it is not necessary to apply lubricant to the threads of the pin bolts.
  4. Install the brake caliper over the brake pads into the brake caliper bracket. NOTE: On second design hardware, the upper caliper pin bolt has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt is of a solid design.
  5. Install the caliper pin bolts and torque to 38 ft-lbs (51 Nm) (1996 - 1999), 63 ft-lbs (85 Nm) (2000 – 2005).
  6. Install the brake hose bolt with new copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose and to the brake caliper, torque to 33 ft-lbs (45 Nm) (1996 – 2001) 32 ft-lbs (43 Nm) (2002 – 2005).
  7. Bleed the brake system.
  8. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance and slowly release the pedal. Wait 15 seconds and do it again until a firm brake pedal is obtained.
  9. Remove the 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  11. Lower the vehicle.

How do u change front brakes on a 2004 kia optima

1. Park on a flat and level surface. Apply the parking brake. Secure the vehicle by wedging something behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
2. Use a syringe, turkey baster or similar tool to siphon out the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir until it's approximately one third full. You can't reuse the old fluid, so you'll need to dispose of it.
3. Remove the wheel and the caliper guide pin bolts. Lift the caliper away from the rotor. Suspend the caliper from the frame using mechanics wire. Remove the brake pads and retainer spring from the caliper. Compress the caliper piston into the bore.
4. Reinstall the brake pads. Place an anti-squeak product on the outside of the brake pads, making sure not to get any of this on the inside of the brake pads. Reinstall the retainer spring to the caliper. Reinstall the caliper in position on the caliper support bracket. Reinstall the guide pin bolts. Reinstall the wheels.
5. Add brake fluid. Start the engine and pump the brakes 3 to 4 times.test drive at slow to moderate speeds to ensure worked correctly.

How do you remove the rear brake caliper on 1996 mercury grand marquis

Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake fitting retaining bolt from the caliper and disconnect the flexible brake hose from the caliper. Plug the hose and the caliper fitting.
  4. Remove the caliper locating pins. Lift the caliper off the rotor and anchor plate using a rotating motion.

WARNING Do NOT pry directly against the plastic piston or damage to the piston will occur.

To install:
  1. Position the caliper assembly above the rotor with the anti-rattle spring located on the lower adapter support arm. Install the caliper over the rotor with a rotating motion. Make sure the inner pad is properly positioned.
  2. Install the caliper locating pins and start them in the threads by hand. Tighten them to 19-26 ft. lbs. (26-35 Nm).
  3. Install the brake hose on the caliper with a new gasket on each side of the fitting outlet. Insert the retaining bolt and tighten to 30-40 ft. lbs. (40-54 Nm).
  4. Bleed the brake system, install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  5. Pump the brake pedal prior to moving the vehicle to position the linings.
  6. Road test the vehicle.

Instructions on how to change the rear brakes on a 2002 mazda protege?

Give me a call.
1) I have owned a Mazda protege 5 for the last 4 years
2) I have done 2 complete brake jobs on it
3) I am a braking systems engineer.
4) I know what I am doing. I have done 100's of brake jobs on lots of different vehicles.

Biggest issue with the protege is getting the piston back in.
Look at the back of the caliper.
There is a thin head bolt on the back.
You need to take this off the caliper and reach inside with an allen head (I think it's 5mm). Then turn the set screw in there out a few turns. Then you can push the piston back in with a regular piston push back tool. Dont worry if the set screw comes out. Just thread it back in. But you HAVE to at least start it back in. It is part of the auto-adjust mechanism. After you do your brakes you may notice that your parking brake has A LOT of play. After you work it a few times it will tighten back up just fine.

Clean averything well and grease the slide pins with a good quality waterproof grease. There is special grease for slide pins.

Changing rear Brakes on a peugeot

Hi Jeff...

I'm afraid this isn't exactly a solution/fix... but I am literally a day or two away from doing this job myself and more importantly though, I've been able to remove the pins you're referring to... so I hope my experiences can help you here.

Btw, my peugeot 406 estate is the V6 version - first edition (I.e. I think '96ish to '99), with rear discs.

Right, the pins I think you're talking about are the biggish ones, which run cross-ways, through the pads & caliper housing. They should come out freely, although each is held in place with a spring-clip. To also confirm we're talking about the same thing, these biggish pins hold the anti-rattle cage in place, which you should be able to see, with the wheel off, looking at the caliper from the side (you should be able to see the sides/edges of the pads too). They are NOT the big bolts that secure the caliper in place.

Anyhow, I used a pair of long nosed pliers to remove the spring clips, then I used the pliers to give the big pin a quick twist (to check it would rotate/move freely, as compared to being rusted in). I then used one half of the pliers to poke the pin backwards. The hole that you push the pin through should be facing you, as you face the car/wheel/brake disc.

Hopefully you will find that by shoving something into this hole, the pin will move away from you, inwards, towards the car... then just move it along until it comes out the back of the caliper housing. BE CAREFUL that the anti-rattle cage doesn't spring off unexpectedly + MAKE SURE you note which way round it goes.

The job itself, I think, won't be hard (otherwise I wouldn't be doing it). However, I did invest in a Haynes manual, which is very good and covers this in detail.

Please note that I've only tried to explain how these pins get removed, not the whole process. I personally found that the big bolts which secure the caliper in place are the pigs to deal with. The nearside wasn't too bad but the offside, cos of the direction you have to turn the bolts through, was awful... and I nearly gave up cos I just COULDN'T get the lower bolt to budge (I did in the end but i was honestly at that one bolt for an hour).

Finally, in case the pad retaining pins are rusted-in, all I can suggest is VERY CAREFUL use of WD40/penetrating oil + trying to rotate the pin (as I mentioned earlier) + something like a nail (suitably thick), which can fit into the hole that the pin resides in and then tap the nail with a hammer, so that the pin gets knocked backwards.
