Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission slips in overdrive

My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission is slipping when in overdrive. It is fine when I manually shift it from 1st gear up to overdrive. But when I put it in overdrive and hit the gas, it just revs and then jolts before it gets going. It has had the same transmission since the car was bought and its running on about 160,000 miles now. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Thank You.

Thanks for your reply thundergod. My brother thinks it might be a shift solenoid also. He did buy a lucas additive (not sure if it was the same thing that you suggested), and we took a quart of the trans fluid that was in there out and put in the additive but the problem persisted. We did not change the fluid, so we'll try a complete change and then adding the lucas conditioner. Thanks again for your help, hopefully it works out.

The additive is not an "instant fix"...It takes time for deposits to form and time to "unstick" things.
give it about a week before changing the fluid.
No chemical will fix a broken or severely worn part...if you find any metal in the pan, chances are the converter is failing....most times best just to replace trans and converter when that happens.

ahh alright, thanks for letting me know, ill post back on the status on things in the next week.

Sounds like a possible shift solenoid. If it's due for a fluid change, do that and add a container of lucas trans conditioner. Likely you have a drain plug on the pan so if the fluid was recently serviced, just drain a quart out and replace with the additive, then top off.
If the condition does not change within a week, likely you will need better diagnosis from a reputable trans shop.

Sounds like your transmission or lockup converter is slipping. The slipping causes heat and it is downshifting out of overdrive as a built-in protection strategy. Get the transmission looked at ASAP before you get stranded because it's stuck in a downward spiral right now. The problem could be caused by a stuck solenoid, which is a relatively cheap fix, but the more you drive it like this, the more you're working toward a full, expensive rebuild.

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee wont shift into 4th it only goes to third what would cause the 4th gear to not engage

There are several things that could cause that.
> Replacement transmission not equipped with overdrive
> Overdrive solenoid in replacement transmission defective
> Overdrive control circuits damaged or loose pins or connections.
> Gear shift linkage or cable out of adjustment
> Transmission range sensor malfunction or out of adjustment

Since you have a computer-controlled transmission, it would be better to ask the onboard computer that question....you will probably get a much more definitive answer.

drop the pan and change the filter and gasket, that might buy you some time if it is not too far gone.
i don't know how many quarts of transmission fluid are required for this task but the part store should have it in their computer

My 94 jeep grand cherokee goes in and out of overdrive while driving and its hard time shifting and my oil presure gauge is maxed out while this is happening what my problem?

that sounds like two different problems...transmission going in and out of overdrive, sure sounds like transmission is slipping...Take that to you mechanic to have them positively identify that...oil pressure maxed, might be a faulty gauge just pinned to the max point as well...does the oil gauge work when you drive......?

Is the overdrive solenoid on a 95 JGC accessible, externally?

no. its part of the valve body inside of the transmission. you would need to drain and remove the transmission oil pan and then remove the valve body. Best left to a transmission shop or reputable repair center.
