Engine knocks like a diesel

Does it knock when you accelerate? Especially under heavy load? If so, try a higher octane gas.

What kind of oil is best for my bug. It has 114 thousand miles on it

For VW gasoline or diesel engines it is recommended to use 5w-30 SYNTHETIC, but needs to meet the VW standard 50200-50500 (most if not all Mobile 1 oils do).

I have a 2003 vw passat 2.8L while changing the spark plugs I noticed oil in the spark plug holes. After gapping and installing the new plugs I drove the car about 20 mile and the check engine light...

Unfortunately the check engine light could be caused by hundreds of things and yet it could have something to do with your changing of the plugs. Do me a favor and take the car to your local auto parts store and they will check the code for the engine light for you for free. Bring that code back here and I will help you figure out what is causing the light and the slugish engine. Sorry for your problem but I'm sure I can help you get it fixed. Thanks for using FixYa!

1999 VW Bug Service engine Light

When you say water light comes on, do you mean coolant level, or coolant temp or ? Check coolant level and top off if needed. Bring the Beetle to a parts store, most offer free check of check eng. light. They will plug a hand held scan tool into the cars diagnostic port (usually located under the dash) and 'read' stored engine codes in the cars computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest what to do. If you have further questions, post them here along with the code numbers.

Very slugish taking off, poor fuel milage

retarded timing will give you all the symptoms you are describing.  If the timing info isn't under your hood go to the public library and use the Haynes or Chilton repair manuals.  When you advance the timing the engine rpms will increase.

Hi

The first thing you should do is have the MAF sensor checked out because the symptoms you describe are that of a faulty MAF.

Very best regards
