Woodruff key stuck

My harmonic balancer was making knocking noises so I replaced it. My brother didn't torque it all the way and when I crank it it sheared off the top of the key in the crankshaft. Now the key is extremely stuck. I have had 3 mechanics come by to check it out and no one has been able to get it out. I have bought picks, chisels, punches, even a dremel. I have run out of options. the last mechanic said i may have to get another motor because no one gonna want to fool with it. Is there something else that can be done?

I normally would not recommend doing this but if it is stuck that badly it seems like an "all or nothing" situation. You need to use an oxy- acetylene torch and heat the keyway (standard plumbers torch will not make enough heat). Do not heat it 'till it is glowing or it may damage the crank. After heat has been applied, use a punch at a 45 degree angle to the surface of the key and strike the punch as if you want to drive the front edge down into the slot.
The key should move back and up enough that you can grab it with vise grips..
Heating the crank likely will damage the front timing cover seal so expect to replace that before you are finished.
If that fails to work, likely you will need to replace the engine....replacing the crank will cost you more than that.
If you cannot get access to a torch, you can try the exact same thing cold. No reason it should be that jammed!
Good luck!

99 trooper 3.5 v6 , believe balancer pulley sheared the key.pulley is wobbling and motor knocking like rod knock.is this a zero tolerance engine and are they known for this problem.sounds like motor is out...

IT is a zero tolerance engine which means that if you break a timing belt there will be valve damage. Check the harmonic balancer and if there is a rubber insert between the pulley and the crank shaft hub then replace the harmonic balancer as this rubber has failed and the pulley will fall off. If the key has sheared as you suspect there would be no engine noise as the engine would not be running. Fix the balancer first then check for the noise as it may be just the balancer

Harmonic balancer bolt came off while driving

Not all of them have a woodruff key, but yours may still be on the crankshaft if you had one. At one time, someone had that pulley off and did not tighten the bolt tight enough-they need to be very tight according to specs, over 100 ft. lbs. of torque when tightening.
Check the balancer for damage and the crankshaft where it sits on. If no visible damage, I think you could use it. Did you go back and pick up the bolt and washer? You need them, or a duplicate from a salvage yard. Now fit the balancer pulley on the crankshaft (its the crankshaft, not the camshaft). It only goes one way. If yours slides on any which way, you have lost the woodruff key, and will have to get one-it would fit in a slot on the shaft, and the notch in the pulley rides over the woodruff. if yours is like that, fit the pulley on, tighten the bolt down solid. You may have to wedge something against the pulley while tightening the bolt to keep the crankshaft from turning. Once you get it on, then fit your belt back on, and you're good to go.

Harmonic balancer the ruber is seperating does this meen its bad will it make a noise like a knocking sound

Yes, it's definitely bad. But I'm not sure it would make a knocking sound. That sounds more like your crankshaft, but the harmonic balancer is designed to smooth out crank imbalances.

1999 Ford Taurus. Can see crankshaft spinning fine coming out of block. Nut on end holding harmonic balanced spinning fine too. Harmonic balancer doesn't spin. How to fix? Do I need to pull the engine to...

There is a key way in the crankshaft and the balancer with a woodruff key that keeps it locked in place. The woodruff key resembles a half moon shape. You will have to remove the balancer to see what kind of damage there is and go from there.

Does the crankshaft have a woodruff key for the harmonic balancer?

hi this depends on what harmonic balancer you are inquiring about, normal balancers do have a woodruff key,but the pulley type harmonic balancer only bolts to a cam hub on what ever it is connected to, such as water pump, etc etc... hope this helps

Car will not accelerate as you shift through the gears (delayed a

i had that problem on a 93 escort and it was because the woodruff key that holds the harmonic balancer in place was broken, the poopy acceleration was because the crank sensor gets its "signal" from cogs on the harmonic balancer, which did not turn at the same speed as the crank shaft because of the drag on the crank pully (crank pully and harmonic balancer are same part)
