Why ac clutch will not engage

2 reasons...no power to clutch, either blown fuse or no charge in the A/C system

Ac fuse location

not sure where the fuse is for sure either under hood or drivers side under dash, but if the refrigerant gets low as it will over time or if theres a leak the ac clutch will not kick in. even with heat on defrost the ac clutch should kick in and out if ts working proper

Gauges,Radio,wipers and headlight won't work.

Sounds like you have at least one blown fuse. Check the fuse panel, It's on the driver's kick panel next to the dead pedal (where you rest your left foot) to the left. of the clutch. The cover for the fuse panel faces the center of the car.

Here is a picture of a good and blown fuse:

Clutch not grabbing instantly

Sounds kinda like slave cylinder, or throw out bearing. Normally a hydraulic clutch will have a small reservoir under the hood, and won't give any trouble until they completely go out.

Ac clutch won't kick in but fuse in fuse block is good, is there another fuse ?

Hi Steve, have the gas pressure of the AC unit checked. There are safety pressure switches in the system which will stop the operation of the AC system if the pressure is too low. regards John

AC compressor won't engage clutch

Lots of things can cause this, I will list them, easiest first.

A blown fuse or relay can prevent the clutch from kicking in. Low refridgerant charge will also do this, the low pressure switch will prevent the clutch from engaging when there is low refrigerant to prevent damage. You may need to put more in, and you also may need to jump the low pressure switch to get the compressor going to add more in. Very rarely the controls could have gone bad, which are the buttons on the dash. Id check out the fuses, relays, and pressure in the system first. A shop may even do a free diagnosis for you.

1986 chevy S10 has no power (12v) at fuse box on the fuse for ac clutch. checked both sides of fuse to ground 00v. ac/heater fuse 12v both sides (fan) works fine

hello, check all fuses, and relays, make sure wires to ac is not broke or has been pinched, sometimes you can run hot wire from battery, to compressor, touch hot side of plug in on comp wire see if it will kick on, if so sounds like a short, if compressor dont kick on with hot wire run to it, tap the out side of comp clutch and see if it kicks on, these compressors will not kick on any way if they are low on freon, once freon is full it should work.

Not sure which fuse under hood is for a c clutch.

It may not be a fuse. If the A/C refrigerant is low the clutch will not engage. There should be a diagram on or near the fuse box labeling the fuses/breakers/relays.
