Before you buy a starter remove the cables from the posts and clean the posts and inside of cables with a wire brush, or sandpaper. Replace the cables and be sure that you tighten them real good. If it still only clicks it is most likely the solenoid which is usually located on top of the starter, and is normally replaced along with the starter.

Hello there:
i would strongly recommend that you to take the car to an a/c repair shop too have the system checked out just because a/c in not working properly doesn't mean that it's low on freon it is really easy to over charge the system and it will perform as if it was to be under charged and you can have the same problem as now or worse it should not cost more than $150 for them to recharge and diagnose the a/c system for any other problem that may be in the system... hope this helps you out please leave a review thanks D.Jones

2003 chevy s-10 wont even turn over? ran fine this afternoon. parked it, came out tonight, and it doesn't even crank over. Nothing!

You need to find someone who knows how to test the electrical circuits , check the battery , battery connections ! Do the headlamps light ? or they bright ? Does the dash light up when you turn the key on ? Without testing we would only be guessing , could be a lot of different thing's .The clicking sound is probably the starter relay . The starter could be bad , wiring problems , main battery feed cable to the starter . Testing is the only way of finding what's wrong, not guessing .
Starter Voltage Drop

Looking at a wiring diagram to see what all is involved for the starter to work . Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. Year , make , model an engine size . Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click on starting . Click search button . then blue link . Does the vehicle have manual or automatic transmission ?
Do you know what a relay is and how it works ?
In this video he shows horn relay but the starter relay works the same way . Starter relay located in the under hood fuse box .
VEHICLE RELAYS Operation Diagnosis

Learning how it works then learning how to test electrical circuits is how we fix automotive electrical problems , not guessing an replacings parts .

When I try to start, why does it sound like the starter is spinning and not engaging anything?

You may need to take the starter off and have it bench tested.
The problem could be the starter drive, or you could have some missing teeth on the flywheel. The drive is supposed to extend when the starter spins to make contact with the teeth on the flywheel. You could also try turning the crank a few inches and try the starter again.

Engine wont turn ovwer

Check battery terminals are clean and firmly connected.

Check the transmission neutral interlock switch operation is OK.
Check +12V is appearing on the starter solenoid control wire when the ignition switch is held in the 'start' position.

If above ok, apply +12v directly to the starter solenoid activation control -starter should immediately engage.
If it doesn't run, you likely have a faulty starter motor.

Dodge dakota 1999

Could be battery. The starter takes a lot more amps than the lights or radio. You should get a jump to start the truck. Then drive to your nearest chain auto parts store. Most of them will do free battery and charging system checks. You could also try disconnecting the positve ( red) terminal of the battery after you get it running. If the engine dies your alternantor is bad. You should also get your battery checked if your alterator is bad. Sometimes a bad alternator damages the battery.
