Question about 2002 GMC Envoy

1 Answer

Grinding sound when driving slowly

I have a 2002 GMC Envoy, approx 78k miles. I have recently began hearing a grinding sound coming from underneath the vehicle. Brakes changed about a year ago. Several control arms have been replaced, shocks and struts recently replaced. The sound is most prominent when I reverse or slowly proceed forward.

Thank you for any ideas or assistance you can offer.

Why do I hear grinding noises while driving?

Hit in the rear axle may have damaged bearings or brake parts. Jack up the side you hear noise from, put on stand, then have helper rotate wheel while you look underneath and listen to see where noise is coming from. Use length of old fuel or heater hose, one end in ear, to locate exactly where noise comes from.

It sounds like a wheel bearing is going bad. They are easy to change. If you have a place to jack the vehicle up. Try spinning the front wheels. You should hear a scraping noise as the wheel turns. Also replace both sides at the same time,as the otherside is not far behind.

I'm hearing a grinding sound coming from underneath my suv. i have replace the brakes about 4 months ago

The sound could be a warning that the front wheel bearings are worn out...this should be a free inspection at your local brake/suspension/muffler repair shop...the bearing seals can deteriorate, and allow foreign objects (small dirt) to be exposed to the bearing...Please have this checked...the grinding probably increases with speed...the faster you drive...Hope this helps.

The water pump bearings could be going out and they will make a grinding noise. The water pump doesn't always leak when the bearings are going out.
