More then likely yes, I would check your Crankshaft sensor, that what send the signal to the coil packs then to the spark plugs, the sensor is held on with a 10mm bolt on the side of the engine block on the passenger side.

1997 dodge intrepid shut off while driving down the road acts like it wants to start but wont

It's common for them to have a bad crank shaft sensor. It is located half way up the bell housing on the passenger side. It takes a 13/32 socket and a 6in extension. Remove the air intake tube and the coil pack ( same socket ) and you can get to it from the top. It just pulls out after you take out the one bolt on the bottom. The part is about $40. Hope this helps.

Dodge intrepid wont start every once in a while and shuts down

well,. gee whiz,. what kind of sensor did you put into the ingine - one for a ford or chevy? Why did you replace the cam sensor? did you check the ohms resistance on the sensor? do you have a check engine light on? did you read the OBD II with a scanner?
Best regards
