The drivers window on my mercedes E200 is getting stuck when it gets half way up. The window looks like it is falling forward but it looks like it is the houseing unit. Anyone come across this before and if so how do you fix it without going to a Merc dealer??

You don't need to go to a Merc dealer, take out the panel and have a close look at the window mechanism, it might have just pop out from the rail, if not you can get a mechanism in a motor parts shop (non genuine) with a 12 months warranty, and fit it by yourself or with some help.

It looks like it is falling forward because the window is "Off Track." Some older windows have snaps near the rear of the window to keep it in the track, they break and the windows lean forward.

The newer style windows use tracks in the doors they rely on. What has happened is your motor drives a Metal Cable on a Plastic Block and tackle like gear, it is only 1 gear the cable rides on. This cable jumps tracks in the gear, In your case it jumped right when the window was half way up. The plastic gear the cable rides on is probably eaten up by the cable, or the cable itself has torn and created a nasty mess.

Sometimes to replace a cable and gear means replacing a very expensive motor. Sometimes you can just buy the cable and track. It is very tedious and very hard to do for someone that doesn't have skill. Ribbits should be drilled out and bolts and nutts should be used where the factory ribits was removed from. Most of the time this track and cable can be replaced if you can find it. Your best bet is a junk yard. Once your window starts to fail, Do not touch it. Service it immediatly to prevent further destruction of the gear or cable. Lots of the time they just come off track, They can simply be put back on. If you keep rolling it up and down this creats problems and the gears and cable gets eatin away.

You hit the nail on the head. What you described is exactly what is happening and it is the plastic runner in the track that seems to be causing the problem. I didn't know about the cable but that would explain why the window is falling forward. There is alot of play in the plastic runner. I had a look at the passenger side and it is tight.

Thanks for the advice it really helped.

A190 front side window stuck in half open position

Hi. The Front windows are on a seperate fuse from the rear and this MAY be your problem. the fuse for the front windows is fuse No 33 - 30amp. (that’s the fourth fuse from the left / centre row, the fuses are numbered) The Rear window fuse is No 42 just for information.

If the battery has been discharged you MUST!!! Reset the Power Windows and Traction control. It's very simple and the instructions are in your driver’s manual. But just in case you don’t have it, here they are:

Resetting the side Power Windows
If the voltage supply is interrupted (battery disconnected or flat), the side windows must be reset to prevent injury to driver or passengers:
  1. Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition lock.
  2. Press on the switches to the (Up or Closed position) pressure point until the windows are fully up, and hold for approximately 1 second.
Resetting the ESP (Electronic Stability Program or “Traction Control Systems”)
If the voltage supply is interrupted (battery disconnected or flat), the indicator lamp will light up while the engine is running.
  1. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop while the engine is running. The indicator lamp will go out & the ESP system is reset.
If you need a copy of all the fuse values and locations etc. Post a reply here at FixYa with your email address and I will forward you a schematic diagram……..[did one for myself that’s easier to understand / follow than the Merc one]

Hope this helps!!!!

Window falling half way down

Behind the door handle is a small plastic cover that has to be removed with a thin screw driver. Once this is removed there is a screw that can be removed. Once the screw is out, you will need to place a thin but strong putty knife into the crack at the bottom of the door and gently seperate the panel from the door metal. The plastic retainers are simply pushed into holes around the door frame.
