What is the recommended engine oil for a 1997 5.7L GMC?

everybody got a different answer.BUT dependant on oil burn i would reccomend a 10/40 semi synthetic,(going upto a 20/50 at 100k if using a pint every 1000miles.)then when oil burn gets too great, time for a rebuild.

My 1997 suburban will not build oil prssure but has plenty of oil and still runs smooth any ideas?

has a mechanical oil pressure gage been hooked up to test the pressure? that is what has to be done, i suspect the gage is giving a false reading or the engine would knock and seize up very quickly.

I did a oil change on my 1994 gmc suburban w/5.7L and it started leaking oil on the back of the motor by the intake and the brass fitting for the oil pressure sensor. It is a steady leak and will lose all...

OK, does it appear that the oil pressure sensor is leaking through the plastic to metal seam (on the sensor itself)?

Have had an oil pressure sending unit go bad and leak on a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais that needed to be replaced.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION C1500 Suburban 1994
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine oil.
  2. Disconnect the sensor electrical lead and unscrew the sensor. The sensor can be found on the top side of the engine, near the distributor. To install:
  3. Coat the first two or three threads with sealer. Install the sensor and tighten until snug. Engage the electrical lead.
  4. Connect the battery cable and fill the engine with oil.
