Most common causes would be...

  • wheel bearing
  • defective wheel bearing
  • bad lower control arm
  • bad ball joint
  • defective strut bearing

I'd advise you go somewhere like Sears where they will do a FREE front end inspection

I can think of two things not easily seen that can cause a banging when hitting small bumps;
The sway bar end links could be loose or broken.
The rear shock bolts, the lower bolt that holds the shock onto the rear axle, I've seen that mounting hole down there get enlarged, allowing the shock bolt to move about when hitting small bumps, causing a banging sound.
Check those two things out.

HHR 2006. Front end shaking. Had a mechanic look & told me struts/shocks, car made poorly ... low, etc. NOW when start and driving loud noise similar to diesel cars--putt, putt. Drives alright....

Get a second and third opinion from other local mechanics.
Does the shaking chang with speeds? It possible you have a tire with slipped internal belt.
Could be a few other things too..
Sound issue may or may not be related. Have more than one guy look at it.

When turning the wheel slightly left or right the front right side makes a grinding sound i just placed new tires on the car and then recheck the tires and even put on new ones they said it may be a wheel...

I would think that you may have a problem with a cv axle. Usually a bearing will make a roaring noise all the time while going down the road. Jack the car up on the right side and see if the rubber boot on the axle is seperated. if so you need to replace that axle. Hope this helps leave comment.

My car makes a bad growling noise. Everyone said that it was a front wheel bearing because that tire was worn down really bad on the outside. I replaced the passenger front wheel bearing, and it is still...

WHEEL BEARING USUALLY STARTS MAKING A ROARING TYPE NOISE WHICH USUALLY GETS LOUDER THE FASTER YOU DRIVE, SOMETIMES THEY WILL BE LOOSE , TO CHECK JACK UP THAT WHEEL AND GRAB TOP AND BOTTOM OF TIRE AND SHAKE, IF THERE IS MOVEMENT, TRY TO GET SOMEONE TO ROCK TIRE FOR YPU AND WATCH WHERE AXLE GOES INTO CENTER OF BEARING AND SEE IF AXLE IS MOVING WITH TIRE MOVEMENT AND SPINDLE REMAINS STATIONARY, THEN IT IS BAD BEARING, OR SOMETIMES THERE WILL BE NO MOVEMENT, THEN BLOCK REAR WHEELS AND RUN CAR WITH THAT WHEEL IN AIR AND SEE IF YOU HEAR NOISE, GOOD LUCK.

2004 volks jetta,, weird noise and slight shaking from left front tire area ,, just had all new tires put on still shaking and a knocking noise

Is the noise apparent when you are making a turn? It sounds like you may have a CV joint problem. When they put new tires on did the installer mentioned that you needed your cv boot or axle replace?

2000 Pontiac Sunfire that Shakes Violently around 45-50 MPH

Check the ball joints and cv axles this could cause the car to shake violently and most tire stores will check them for you for free.

Strange noise from front drivers side after approaching 30mph.

2 possibilities bearings or damaged rotor. Inspect the rotor, and you can jack the vechicle up just by that tire leaveing the tire free to turn. grab the wheel on the sides try and shake top to bottom in and out, then side to side in and out. If you have play more than likely its your hub bearings.
