Question about 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK

1 Answer

My 2000 clk 320 wont start it cranks but wont fire, The fuel pump is not coming on the relay is good. the cps is putting out a little over 1vac. I checked the voltage at the cpu connector e pin 37 & 38. I can hot wire the fuel pump or supply a ground to the relay and the pump operates. I also am not getting any spark. any Ideas?

The only thing that will shut the fuel and the spark - is crank position sensor. And they do go bad on MB.
If you have scaner which can read data from the engine , you can monitor the rpm while you crank the engine , if you see 0 rpm while cranking , CP sensor caput.

Testimonial: "thank you for your help. you were right on the money. the crank sensor was open when I tested it with a ohm meter but it was still putting out 1.4vac I repaired this for a 17 yr old girl at no cost (she had lost her father) I just want to thank you, I couldn't have done without your help."

    Thanks fobara,

I dont have a scanner but its is putting out 1.32VAC could the crankshaft sensor still be the problem?

  • Greg Stefan Jun 03, 2010

voltage is not a signal . crank sensor is a magnet that sens a pin on a flywheel when it's turning , and send a signal like a puls to ECU. So it still might be the problem.
I'm sorry I foget what multimeter you need to use to check the puls , sience I'm using scaner.

At normal operating temp. resistance of CPS 700-1400Ohm.

But it might be still good and sensor bad.

You need to check frequency at pin 38 ( + ) and 37( - ) while cranking. Find out what you measure frequency with , then hook up multimeter lids - red to 38 black to 37 .(you'll have to pinch wires on the back of harness connector ) , the signal should fluctuate up and down quick, I assume between - 14 and + 14 ms. while cranking , if signal is flat sensor no good.

Harness connected to the computer during frequency test.

actually they suggest to view wave pattern , it should look like horizontal zig-zag with sharp
and even corners. Frequency depends on RPM.

My '99 chevy truck with 5,7L 350 will start but wont stay running. put new fuel pump and relay switch in

First you must determine if the fuel is stopping or the spark is stopping..If the fuel is stopping this could be a computer problem.. If the spark is stopping then it could be the IGN Module in the distributer. or any nomber of sensors. Squirt a little fuel directly into the Throttle body on the intake manifold.. If the truck runs longer its probably loss of fuel.. Do this several times to make sure, be careful and only use a small amounty of fuel.. you do not want a fire.. RE: Spark: Take a plug wire and an old plug..put the wire on the plug.. hold the plug against a good ground .. have someone crank the engine .. does the plug stop firing? The engine dies.. and will not restart for a minuet or so.. during this "no start" time do the plug test. If the plug will not fire during this time take the module out and take it to Orillys Auto parts.. They can test it.. really expensive part. Don't replace until you know it is BAD..

My 99 pontiac grand am wont idle or start i changed head gasket and intake manifold gaskets

First thing I would do is a compression test on cylinders, then fuel pressure test. Make sure your starter relay is good. If it is cranking over but not firing could be fuel relay, fuel pump, and could be as simple as a vapor lock. Spray some starter fluid in the intake, if it fires up for a couple seconds, then tells you not getting fuel, and this narrows down the search to the fuel pump relay, fuel pump.

Now your statement is YOUR CAR wont start or idle, as you can tell that is two different things. Which one is it, wont start at all? or starts then dies because it wont idle?If it wont start, then check the things I just advised, if it wont idle, then that could be plugs, coils, idle arm, fuel filter possibly clogged. List goes on and on. Need to know little more detail of what exactly it is doing, and what you have already checked or tried for me to dissect it down more direct with trouble shooting. I can help you for sure, just little more info needed, or you can go through the list I just said and it will I am sure fix problem once you check and repair or replace as you come across that problem area that is not functioning proper. Thanks Mike

I have an 1999 ford rsnger that wont start

DOES IT HAVE POWER/ A GOOD BATTERY? IF SO CHECK & SEE IF IT IS GETTING FIRE OUT FROM THE COIL PACKS,THE QUICKEST WAY TO SEE IF IT IS FIRE OR A FUEL PROBLEM IS SPRAY A LITTLE STARTING FLUID IN THE THROTTLE BODY,& IF IT CRANKS & THEN CUTS RIGHT BACK OFF ITS A FUEL PROBLEM,FUEL PUMP FUSE,FUEL PUMP RELAY,OR FUEL PUMP,& OR FUEL FILTER, IF ITS NOT GETTING FIRE IT COULD BE A CRANK SENSOR, A CAM POSITION SENSOR,COIL PACK(S) OR A FUSE OR RELAY.

2000 jimmy will crank but wont start, fuel put is

Then it is the fuel pump. Can you hear the fuel pump come on if not that is what it is. That is why when you put fuel in the intake it started. Good Luck.

Mercedes clk 320 will not start

i have a 2000 clk320. it would not start sometimes, the engine would crank but it wont start. but after an hour or so it would start. sometime i'll get somewhere park, and come out an hour later and the engine would not start. if your having the same problem, take it to autoparts store ex: autozone or kragen. they could check your battery for free. and if its not the battery. than it could either be your fuel pump. or the crank position sensor. good luck. hopefully this help.

2000 Dakota 3.9 V6 wont start just cranks, has plenty of fuel

I agree that it's probably the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS).  Without the pulse from this sensor, you vehicle will never start.  Sometimes water from a leaking water pump will run down onto this sensor and cause it to fail.
You can go to MSN Auto for your vehicle and under the "Reliability" tab  you will see the same thing regarding the CPS (listed under Engine issues).
