Question about 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

Open Question

91 cutlass transmission goes into neutral during heavy braking

91 cutlass v6 4spd OD transmission just had pan off service no damage found oil good no burnt smell filter ok. Heavy braking to a stop, like using a left turn lane, transmission acts like it looses pressure, goes into neutral for 5 to 10 seconds and then picks up in 1st gear. If I keep RPMs up a little, it will shift down through the gears and stay engaged. Happens mostly when driving in OD. Works fine in all other circumstances. No code or trouble light indicator. 83K miles

SOURCE: the problem is basically my automatic transmission

take it by autozone and let them decode the computer and they can tell you what the codes are. That will at least be a starting point.

SOURCE: Hard down shifts

Check the transmission fluid level, see if there is any foaming in the fluid which is bad, and condition, If the fluid is low the transmission fluid pressure could be low and if the transmission fluid filter is dirty, that could also be restricted the fluid flow.
The transmission fluid should be bright red like strawberry in colour, if it's dark like burgundy then it's time to change the transmission oil and filter. The hard down shifting could be a servo that is sticking caused by dirt in the fluid, have a Transmission shop service the transmission and scan the car's ECM for any codes that may be causing your shifting problem.
Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: transmission not shifting gears in drive at freewill

There is a vaccum modulator on the front of the transmission. It has a single vaccum line going to it and is held in place with one bolt. This part controls your up and down shift. Its a 20.00 part. Try replacing it first. If that dosent do it then you will need a rebuild or replacment.

My automatic is slow to change gear until it warms up only the first five minutes. Is it oil or intercooler

auto transmissions are real sensitive to oil and flow issues. Not knowing your make, year, and service history, I will make the following suggestion. Have your transmission serviced with a Flush, filter change, and new oils. This should fix any flow issues that can cause this problem. If still an issue after that, you will need to have it serviced or it will fail in the long run.

NOTE: service facilities such as Oil & Go, have this flushing service available at a flat rate charge and I would use this type service rather than a transmission shop....but that is your choice .... hope this helps...

Leaking transmission fluid

TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKS,CAN BE FOUND AROUND PAN GASKET.CHECK PAN GASKET,IF IT LOOKS WET AND YOU SEE FLUID DRIPPING AROUND THE EDGE OF OIL PAN, REPLACE PAN GASKET, WHILE YOU REPLACING PAN GASKET REPLACE TRANSMISSION FILTER WHILE OIL PAN OFF.IF TRANSMISSION OIL PAN NOT LEAKING, CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LINES GOING INTO RADIATOR YOU WILL LOOSE A LOT OF FLUID THERE ALSO TORQUE SHAFT SEAL WILL CAUSE HEAVY FLUID LEAK WHILE ENGINE RUNNING CHECK OIL COOLER LINES AND LOOK AT THE TORQUE AREA WHILE ENGINE RUNNING YOU WILL SEE FLUID POURING WHILE ENGINE RUNNING THE OIL PUMP PRESSURE WILL PUSH FLUID OUT AT THE LEAKING AREAS.

Transmission trouble on 2002 Ford E-450 Super Duty

Hi, this is a defective OD shift solenoid that is located inside the trans pan. you will have to drop this pan in order to extract it for replacement. this solenoid, if damaged, cant initiate the shift sequence required for the OD to engage during operational procedures.

Simply replacing this solenoid will fix this issue.

NOw, concerning the erratic shifts. this is isolated within the transmission control module. it seems to be malfunctioning. you will need to replace this module as well.

OD on Auto gearbox goes into neutral when cold

You need to have your transmission serviced. The fluid has gotten so thick in there that it builds up too much pressure and your transmission will either kick it out of gear or blow up. I'm glad it actually still works. Once the oil warms up it thins right out and it works no prob. Just service your tranny, and you'll be fine.
