Re: Oil pump pressure reading on gauge
Any engine that cannot produce at least 15psi pressure at idle likely has a pressure loss at the crank bearings (most commonly connecting rod bearings) You can check the clearance by using plasti-gage on them once you have the pan removed. Most times the pump is blamed for the loss of pressure but actually the pump likely has some scoring inside the housing and on the gear ends that has been caused by bearing material getting in there. If you replace the pump alone, some pressure will be restored but that will go away quickly as more bearing material is ingested. The pump should be replaced along with the failing bearing shells (actually best to replace all). If main bearings are worn (rare) engine will need to be removed for that service. Always re-check bearing clearances before re assembling the engine. If any are still out of clearance, you may want to use an oversize bearing there. After checking or replacement, always re-torque anything that was removed. Clearance specifications can be found in any good manual.

Engine oil pumps rarely fail. When the oil pressure is low, it's usually due to worn bearings. Other causes are possible, but the oil pump is inside the oil pan on the bottom of the engine. Before deciding that it needs to be replaced, the oil pressure should be checked with a pressure test gauge - not the gauge on the vehicle, because that gauge could be inaccurate. In fact, a defective oil pressure sending unit, gauge or wiring is far more likely than oil pump failure. Be sure the oil level is correct. Compare the reading in psi. to the manufacturers specification. Also consider the oil viscosity. Thin oil gives lower pressure than thicker oil (higher numbers like 40) however, thinner oil flows faster. Use the oil recommended. have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge to determine the exact pressure reading. It may be a stuck pressure relief valve in the pump (gauge correct) or a faulty gauge ( sender unit correct)
The oil light is warning the driver the engine has no oil pressure. That could be due to the engine oil level being low, or because of a problem with the oil pump. is it possible you unplugged or damaged the oil pressure switch on the engine ?
The first stop is to measure the pressure with an external gauge. if the readings are the same, surgery is needed, I would look at the oil pressure relief valve for foreign particles.
It takes resistance to make pressure, and your decsription does not sound good. If the pressure is actually dropping, and you find no issues with the oil pump and pick up, you need to measure bearing clearances... Essentially, everywhere oil is pumped needs to be inspected...
Could be the oil pressure sender has gone bad or worse case scenario the oil pump has worn out. Check the oil presssure sender first, if it is leaking around it then that is the cause, if not then you may be looking at an oil pump. Just had a 03 ram 2500 doing the same thing and it was the sender, but that was a hemi and it had 230000 miles and a month later had to replace the oil pump for same issue.
make sure are using a genuine dodge oil filter and correct grade of oil to check further you need to have the oil pressure checked using a master gauge a garage would do this for you if ok replace pressure switch if very low could be pump and bearing wear is the idle speed set too low i would check this
The fuel pump on that model runs through the oil pressure switch so that if the truck looses oil pressure,It kills power to the fuel pump to prevent engine damage.you need to find the cause of the low oil pressure reading(possibly a bad oil switch).That would be the cheapest place to start,or have it checked with a mechanical gauge.Good luck, ChevRev
I have a 1999 dodge ram with a 5.9liter. Come to a stop and bam no pressure. Replaced sending unit twice. First after market, then mopar. Problem is still there. Replaced pump. Problem was still there. So I talked to tons of dodge mechanics, and this is the real problem. Who ever said that these engines are none for sludge is just reall really stupid. BOTTOM LINE ON THAT FACT. Sludge comes from neglect... Dodges oil pump makes 8-10 Psi at idle. Always mechanically test that no MATTER what. But the sending unit needs 12-14 psi to read it. So what happens is the engine warms up, and the oil thins. Then you come to a stop, and rpms are low, and your not producing enough psi for the sending unit to read it. So your truck is fine. But if the chime is getting to you. Install a high volume pump. I returned the stock one, and got the high volume pump. I will bet if you change your oil every 3,000 miles you will not see sludge at all. If your dodge has high miles replace valve cover gaskets, becauce the high volume pump may cause the gaskets to leak. Whoever said ther none for sludge just has no love for a dodge, or is a moron mechanic that is stuck in his ways. High volume pump is the fix $85.00 plus pan gasket. If you have a 4x4 you can do it yourself. Drop the starter. Remove torque converter cover. With a 13mm socket with a variety of extentions, and removing a dozen bolts. Do it yourselfer will complete it in 4 hours....
