Do you have access to a non contact laser temp gauge?
If so shoot the thermostat housing and see if the gauge is correct.

If the gauge is off from the laser then replace the engine coolant temp sensor,
If the gauge is correct then double check the thermostat installation,is it in backwards? or maybe you got a bad thermostat.

did you flush the entire system when you replaced water pump?

I have replaced the radiator and water pump (which is the correct pump). Put two mini fans on the front of the radiator. Took out the thermostat and it still runs hot.

It will run hotter with no stat, the water goes too fast too get cooled in the rad. Would be better off to try cutting the center out of the old stat and just run the "restrictor" . If it gets hot at hiway speeds,NAPA sells a combustion leak dectector, will let you know if it's a head gasket or not. Just a liquid that changes color if it sees exhaust.

The radiator cap may not be holding enough pressure. Also, don't drive without the thermostat. It will mess up the closed-loop operation of the fuel injection system. That trick worked 40 years ago.

Hey guys and gals, I am a technician at a california shop and we got a 2001 Saturn L200 2.2L in the other day. Vehicle came in overheating. The upper radiator hose was hot to touch up at the engine but not...

Sounds like the orifices and passageways in the engine could be plugged up. Try to backflush with a power flusher , if you have one, to force out any sediment which may be in there.

If you can't flush out the engine because you don't have the equipment, try a radiator shop and add the bill on to the ticket, if the customer consents.

I have a 1989 plymouth voyager mini van, It got hot and we put complete new head gaskets on it and another water pump , and a new thermostate. But it still blows water out of radiator and shows hot on heat...

If the thermostat was installed backwards, it won't open when the engine heats up. The spring/sensor should go toward the engine and the valve plate goes toward the radiator. If the hoses stay cold, it points to no water flow as above. Hope this helps!

Overheating

Put in a t-stat. No thermostat can act like a bad thermostat, causing over heating, i too have a 94, it was clacking eradically, turns out it was the t-stat opening and closing about 60 times a minute, so i took it out, it got hot, put a new one in, and no more issues.

What temp rating is the thermostat you bought ? there are 3 I believe for your truck, check this and if it is rated below 200 degrees then I would re-flush and add new anti-freeze 50/50.
