Question about 1998 Saturn SL
You can take it to autozone and for free they will put their little 45 dollar analyzer on it and give you the error codes. You look that up in their book and have an idea of what problem is causing the service light to come on.
Or you can take it to a dealer or shop and they will put a much more expensive diagnostic computer on it and it will give them the error codes and they can tell you how much to fix it so the light goes off. I had a bunch of Saturns, at least 4 S-series, and the most common problem causing the service engine light was O2 sensors. There is one in front of and one to the rear of the catalytic converter. That is not to say that is what is causing the issue in your car.
