Question about 1999 Dodge Durango

1999 Dodge Durango 4x4 with bad transfer case?

1999 Dodge Durango 4x4 (smaller engine; 5.2L I think) was riding down the freeway at approximately 55mph when I heard a whirring noise coming from the front-middle of the truck followed almost immediately by extremely loud clunking noises (almost sounded like the CV boot broke away) and then the truck lost all power in the drivetrain. It won't shift into any gear (sounds like the gears are just spinning) and there was a lot of what looks like tranny fluid beneath the truck as well as a trail from where it appeared to have started faulting. Is it possible that we just need to replace the transfer case and/or yoke and spline, or is this going to involve more?

From what you said, it sounds like the converter on the transmission may have broken, Since it's loosing oil, it shouldn't be difficult to determine which part is leaking.
Check the transmission and transfer case fluid. Whichever is low is the unit with the problem. To verify, re-fill it and put a pan under there and start it up and look. You mentioned the yoke and spline. If either have broken you need to determine why, then replace whatever is necessary. If the splined shaft that the yoke is attached to has broken then the transfer case will need to come apart as it is part of the larger internal assembly. (may be easier for you to just get a different unit from a scrapyard.)

I have a 1999 dodge durango 4x4 im having an issue with a grinding noise comming from the front of the vehical,im not sure if its the front diff. or half shaft or the transmission

SOUNDS LIKE A TRANSFER CASE ISSUE. DODGE HAS USED A FEW DIFFERENT TRANSFER CASES NVGS TO THE BW'S BUT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBS, JUNK, THE NOISE THE JUMPING WHICH WE CALL BINDING IS ALL COMMON ISSUES. IT CAN BE A ADJUSTMENT ISSUE SO CHECK THAT FIRST BUT INTERNAL ISSUES ARE COMMON AS WELL.HOPE THAT HELPS

Bought a 1999 durango lady said it needs a tranfer case replaced was driving down road and transfer case broke and blew apart took to mechanic replaced transfer case but started vibrating after driving...

This type of vibration is typically caused by a bad universal joint on the drive line. I've seen a case where a bad u-joint caused the transfer case to crack and explode. Replace all the u-joints on the front and rear drive lines. They are usually only around 15 bucks each at NAPA and will be much cheaper than another T-case.

How do you use 4WD on a 1999 dodge durango?

there are 2 systems.
one is a part time system only.the 4x4 locks and is for ice mud and snow.Driving full time will damage the transfer case. The other system is a full time system and the selector says 2wd,4wd part time ,4wd full time and 4 lo. if in full time,it can be driven all the time even on dry roads. The full time is really an all wheel drive system.
the 4low is a very low gear and the main shifter has to be put in neutral and then the transfer case put in 4 low.attempting to put it in 4 low while in "drive" will make a gear grinding noise.
getting out of 4 low is the opposite.shifter to neutral and then put it in 2wd and then in drive. The newer durango has an electronic transfer case with a dial on the dash. The 2002 was available with 2wd,4wd,awd and 4 lo on a switch. The 1999 has the lever on the floor .

I need usede transfer case in illinois area for cheap

A lot of times a used transfer case will be more trouble than it's worth. If you case isn't broken you can usually get one rebuilt for not too much. I know a shop in MN that is really good, and he'd probably be willing to ship it to you. You can buy a rebuild kit for one for 100.00 dollars. They're not too bad to do, I can do one in under 2 hours. If you really want a used one try the salvage yards. Most of them work with a network of yards and can get them from all over the country.

Yes. They should both be 46RE transmissions and the bolt patterns and the plugs should be the same.
