Here ya go!

3.0L DOHC VIN S Engine
CAUTION NEVER open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities.Always drain coolant into a sealable container. If necessary, clean coolant maybe reused unless it is contaminated or more than two years old.

  1. Drain the coolant until the level of the coolant is below the level of the thermostat.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection.
  4. Unfasten the two water inlet connection retaining bolts and remove the water inlet connection.
  5. Remove the O-ring seal and thermostat from the water inlet connection. Inspect the O-ring for damage and replace as necessary.
To install:
  1. Clean the water inlet connection mating surfaces.
  2. Install the O-ring, thermostat and the water inlet connection. Refer to Figure 10 if you can't remember how the O-ring and thermostat are positioned.
  3. Install the water inlet connection assembly retainers and tighten them to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  4. Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
  5. Fill the engine with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.
  6. Stop the engine and top off the coolant recovery reservoir as necessary.

SOURCE: DOHC or OHV, How do I tell?

If it's a V6 then it would be a Double Over Head Cam... Thermostat will be on top of engine where coolant outlet to upper hose is located... Hope this helps...;-)

SOURCE: Where is the thermostat located on a 2004 Mercury

The thermostat is on the other side (passenger) at the bottom front of the engine, accessible from underneath. It has 2 10 mm bolts securing the housing and a hose run to it.

When my sable gets in hot wheater and drives for a distanse it will blow the tranny fluid all out. if i let it coll down and refill it it drives fine. whats wrong ? Its a 1999 DOHC motor sable.

You need to have the fluid changed and replaced with fresh fluid. The reason it is currently boiling the fluid and causing it to spill out is because of the drop in viscosity of the current fluid and is unable to perform its duties. I would take it to a local AAMCO transmission shop, they have always done good work for me.

Can you please tell me some problems I would be having if my rack and pinion is out or needs to be replaced. 99 Mercury Sable 24 valve DOHC

Normal problems would be excess tyre wear, a vague feeling through the steering, perhaps knocking from the front on rough or uneven surfaces, Regards Mike

For the 3.0 ohv engine follow the upper hose the the housing on the intake manifold. It will be behind that housing. On the 3.0 DOHC engine. Follow the lower hose to the water outlet housing. The thermostat will be behind that housing.
