NO. the airbag will only go off in a direct frontal collision at about 9mph(in usa) and 15mph in europe.the warning light is to tell you that you have a fault in the system and it may NOT go off unless rectified.

A warning light has come on indicating an air bag problem can u explain if it could be serious

When an airbag warning light comes on, it is a warning that the system will not operate as designed in case of a crash. In most cases, the system is inhibited from any operation when that light is on. The manufacturers say that the airbag will not deploy under these circumstances but I disagree. I actually witnessed and airbag deployment in a vehicle with the light on, at approximately 2 mph. Have it properly diagnosed and repaired immediately.

Flashing Airbag Light Prior to Startup

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.
The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.

Airbag light flashes then stays on in our 2002 Ford Explorer.

Safety Belt pre-tensioner Status (Driver pre-tensioner Circuit Fault).
On the seat belt buckle there is a pre-tensioner that when vehicle is involved in an accident it will deploy and pull the belt tighter.

If the vehicle has never been involved in an accident it could be what we call terminal fretting which is just a build up on the terminals which cause a open circuit. Usually just unplugging and reconnecting the connector a couple of times will fix this.

If this doesn't correct it I would recommend having your local dealer look at it.

My BMW 328I airbag light is on and it does not shut off.

BMW's are renowned for having airbag light problems. Most of the time, there isn't even a problem with your airbags. Sometimes a sensor goes bad, sometimes it's a wire is loose, sometimes there's nothing wrong at all. It could be anything. But it is very unlikely that the airbags would not deploy in an accident, but of course the best way to know for sure is take it to a mechanic that can read the codes with a computer.

I recently had a small accident and both my airbags deployed. I fixed the bumper and the would like to refit the airbags, however don't know the exact location of the diagnostic monitor. I've been told, it...

It is underneath the center utility tray and yes it has to be replaced if air bags deployed. You should be getting a air bag light flashing a code 19. One flash a pause the nine flashes. You may have other codes also,if you reply back with what they are we can tell you what to look for.

Air Bag Code

Code 52 relates to low voltage detected in a capacitor inside the airbag module. 45 seconds after key on, this capacitor should have a voltage of around 23 volts.

This capacitor stores energy to deploy the airbag in the case of a collision.

Because your airbag light is on, your system is deactivated (cannot deploy)

In your case, the airbag computer detects less than 23 volts at that capacitor 45 seconds after key on, and disables the system.

There is a diagnostic procedure involved in fixing this problem, but usually means a bad airbag module (computer)

This should only be checked by a qualified technician, as airbag service can be dangerous and there are strict procedures to follow so the bags don't inflate suddenly and cause injury.
