To demist, the HVAC control system should automatically engage the ac compressor when 'defrost' is selected on the control dial. Check and see if your ac compressor is engaging, and that you have a good charge on the ac system.

I have a 96 cabriolet, and the AC controls are cable operated. Check your cables under the dash. there i a button for the ac, right next to the recirculate button separate from the dials. If that doesn't kick in your AC, check relays and fuses, and then low pressure switch, assuming you already know that you are full of freon.

Most likly this van has seperate controls for driver and passenger heat and ac controls. If its blowing hot air your heat is working. These controls operate differant dampers that are electonicly controlled. If the dials arent working they would cause this problem.

How do I open up the dash to get out the ac control unit, dials are not working so I wanted to replace the unit

Wut do u meanthe dials are not working?
U mean the FAN don't work?
If the FAN don't work, its not the panel u have to remove.... its the resistor block that controls the FAN and the SPEED!

Only 4 & 5 speeds work on the AC fan dial...1-3 do not blow any air but you hear the AC kick in

There is a blower control module in the heater case that is known for going bad. Also it will sometimes burn where the connector plugs in.
