Question about 2000 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

When I turn the steering wheel there is a popping sound when I'm just about as far to the left and sometimes to the right. I've been under there with someone turning the wheel a few times and I can't for the life of me figure out what's making that sound. Any idea's?

It is either a rusty u-joint,or the strut/shock has a rubber or plastic piece the spring slides on when wheels are turned and when this keeps gunked up from road grime and rust the plastic or rubber fails to turn easy and then all the sudden breaks free when wheels are turned and the pop you hear is the strut spring snapping back, while it is annoying it won't hurt anything, but to fix it correctly you need to drop the strut and clean the upper plate and apply a good waterproof grease.

sounds like the valves in the box or rack want renewing.can you get a recon rack?.or you could do a pressure check of the pump by teeing in a pressure guage

What is wrong with my car

That sounds very much like you broke off a tie rod end. Check to see if the front wheels agree with each other. Turn the steering far left, verify both front wheels are turned left. Turn the steering far right, verify both wheels are turned right. If the front wheels don't agree, DO NOT attempt to drive the car - have it towed somewhere or have someone repair the steering where it sits.

My car will not start or the key will not turn

Sometimes the key will not turn due to pressure on the steering column caused by the wheels being under tension. If you grab the steering wheel and turn it left and/or right as far as you can, while turning the key, you can relieve the pressure and the key will turn to start the car. Once the key turns you should have no more problem. Hope this helps and good luck :O)

Power steering

the power steering reservoir on this car is on the passenger side, back of the motor, far down. you will see a small cap with a picture of a white steering wheel. keep looking, it's difficult to see but it is there!
as for the noise, my first suspicions would either be upper strut bearings, or possible a lower control arm bushing pulling out of place. failing those, could be a seizing tie rod end or ball joint. very unlikely, but not to be ruled out, is the intermediate steering shaft (what connects your steering wheel to the steering rack). a mechanic with a good knowledge in suspension diagnosis should be able to pick off your problem. if you wish to continue diagnosing yourself, a mechanics stethascope can be very useful to hear wear the steering linkage is binding. good luck!

if its dieing when you turn the wheel your steering column is probably loose, that happened to me and after id turn the wheel so far it would pop the keep back and the truck would die, i replaced the steering column and she worked great

My ignition will not turn over in the meaning of the key would not turn at all not that it wouldnt start the key would not turn at all seemed like it was locked somehow

Your steering lock sounds like the problem. Try rotating the steering wheel slightly so that the pressure is not on the ignition lock and the key should turn and you can start your engine. The steering wheel will only need to mave a fraction of a turn to take the pressure off the lock.
