1970 Chevy El Camino starter broke teeth on flywheel. What would cause this?

several reasons
the teeth on the ring gear were damaged from continuous grinding during pinion engagement or engagement of the starter when the engine is running causing a burring of the teeth that altered the mesh ability and jammed the ring gear and pinion
metal in the teeth of the ring gear that causes a jam in rotation
starter motor not engaging before rotating
wrong no of teeth on replacement starter pinion or starter motor

My 93 jeep grand cherokee wont start but it is cranking over but not catching....checked all wires sprk plugs fluids air filter everything is connected been getting conflicting reports that its the starter...

if the starter is turning, but the motor isnt, its the starter failing to engage the flywheel. The rotation of the starter is supposed to force a gear forward to engage the flywheel, when that gear freezes up, the starter spins and the motor doesnt.you can try givinbg the starter a few sharp taps with a small hammer or wrench to see if it frees up

Will start sometimes and wont start sometimes. batt is good. do you think it is the starter? it doesnt do it all the time

If the starter rotates [ turn-over ] the engine, then it isn't the starter. If it dosen't turn-over all the time, then it could be the problem. Other items that will cause issues are the nutrual saftey switch,or the igntion switch.
The starter can be tested in the car, many autopart stores will do this for free.

Wont start engine doesnt rotate acts like a starter problem replaced battery all connections starter and selnoid

try turning motor over with socket on harmonic ballancer if there is no movement it could be internal (bearings) also check your altenator they sometimes lock up and the starter does not have the power to turn the motor with the altenator. if it does turn check for power on the smaller terminal on the sollenoid when the key is in the start position if there is no power here the problem may be in the ignition switch or safety neutral switch

2001 beetle battery hot turn key all the light come on but starter doesnt engage

try bridging the wires on the starter motor with a start button.
that or replace the ifnition switch.
if you bridge and the starter doesnt turn over its a bad starter
if it does its a bar ignition switch.
lmk if this helped

1996 Ford Explorer The starter spins but won't engage put new starter and solenoid and still have same problem

i know this might seem like a pain but remove your starter again and test it with jumper cables to see if the pinion drive extends and rotates if it doesnt then your starter is defective

Car doesnt start at all !

check battery
check fuses & wiring to starter
check power at starter main (big red wire)
check for power at starter solenoid (small) wire when key turned start position
if all above are good, try whacking starter body with a hammer lightly while trying to start, don't run yourself over if it does!
replace starter if all electrical good

if all electrical fail test/inspection, ei; no power to starter on small wire, yet big wire hot, check for bad ignition switch

check for

Truck won't start.

Check your starter selenoid by jump the battery side of the terminal to the small post next to the battery side. It should send the signal to the starter and rotate the engine. If it doesn't your selenoid is bad. You can bench test your starter by removing it and using jumper cables. Connect the battery post on the starter to the red side of the cables and the black to the starter housing at the bolt hole. The go to the positive and negative of the battery. Starter should rotate, if not, replace it. I usually replace the selenoid and starter together.
