The first thing to look at is the brake booster, this is what make the pedal easy to push, make sure its getting vacuum,if there plenty of vacuum then i would say the booster is bad, the booster is where the master cylinder bolt too.heres a picture of it, hope this helps.Hi,I have a 1993 jaguar xj6,the braking system is - aba0fab.jpg

The above is not from a 93 XJ6, but the older style vacuum-driven booster. The 93 has a hydraulic/electric booster that is not located at the master cylinder, but in the engine compartment directly in front of the passenger. it has an electric pump on the bottom and a softball size pressure canister on top. This is a major variation from standard systems, and well, Jaguar just loves electronics that fail (on occasion), so they went with their own system. Have fun.

How do you know that a brake booster is bad?

Booster problems are rare but they do go bad sometimes.
A bad booster generally causes the brake pedal to feel hard to push down, and a lot of pressure on the brake pedal is required to make the car stop.
Rarely, a vacuum brake booster will develop a vacuum leak, which can cause engine performance problems, hissing or whistling noise, as well as requiring increased pressure on the brake pedal to stop.

The first test:
With the vehicle parked, turned OFF, and the parking brake set, pump the brake pedal 5 to 6 times. If the pedal gets harder to push after several times, your booster is probably good.

The second test (To make sure):
After the test above, without making any changes, press and hold the brake pedal with light to moderate pressure.
Now with your foot still on the brake pedal, start the vehicle.
If the booster is good, you will feel the pedal go down when the engine starts.

Hope this helps!

1993 buick lesabre changed the front rotars and pads and now the cars brake pedal is so hard to push down to get car to stop. Mechanic has checked both the front and back brakes and they are fine. T

I would jack up a front wheel and see if pushing on the pedal with the engine running will stop the wheel from turning.
You need to know if the pressure is reaching the wheels, or if the pads and rotors are too slick to stop the car.
Usually if the pedal is hard, the booster is not working or the brakes are glazed.
Can you stop the car with the parking brake ? That only uses the rear brakes.
You may need a second opinion from a different shop.

Jaguar XJ40 1994. The brake warning light is activated when the brake pedal is depressed. I have consulted the manual which states that the brake fluid requires topping up or there is an electrical fault...

the master cylinder could be defective or the proportioning valve is stuck. You can try slamming the brake pedal down at a stop. this may reset the valve, if it goes off thats your problem. if it continues to stay on pull the E Brake or parking brake see if the pedal rises up f the pedal comes up it may mean your rear shoes are worn and the wheel cylinder or caliper seal is leaking. to test if all brakes are working go about 10 mph Be sure you e brake works then hit the brakes once you stop get out and look if there is rubber on the ground on all four wheels. do this in a area where it's safe and you can come to a atop before hitting someone Else's property or going over a cliff. If the front brakes work then your rear are not working if there is no marks on front that means there is a problem with the front brake system. remember the light is a warning jamming down the brakes may cause the master cylinder to fail so be sure your mechanicl emergency brake works good before doing test. otherwise you may experince the pucker factor, one guy at a shop I worked for pushed his tool box ouy yhr tindoor he didn't check the e-brake before doing the test in front of the shop. Opps.
