Hi! If the airconditioning system doesnt stand the hot temp then the problem will be on the expansion valve. When the expansion valve is faulty it fails to give cold air specially on hot weather but it runs fine on normal temp. Once replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and have a good one!

    My 1997 BMW 528i Aircondition.

It might be the expansion valve also. But with the fan speed set high, why would the fan speed drop down to the lowest setting on its own,and you can feel the air coming out the vents very low and very cold.

Thanks for the clarification. If thats the case then the evaporator needs cleaning. It may be covered with dust and dirt causing poor performance. It can resolve the problem.

If the evaporator is dirty causing poor porformance wouldent this prevent the A/C from working normal when the ambiant temp is cool... When its cool outside, the A/C works fine and You can set the fan speed any place along the range and the air flow is good. But as it gets Hot outside,no matter where you have the fan speed set at ,it drop off to the lowest the air is still col, and you cannot manually changeit.

Ok, I really do suspect the expansion valve on this plus cleaning will surely help. When its hot, I do believe that the blower gets weak and one cause can be the blower motor for it is forced too much. You may need to replace the blower motor too.

I have a 1997 528I and we just had a ton of rain dumped on us and I noticed that the floor behind the driver's side was soaking wet! I'm sure my window was up and there were no traces of water coming down...

It is a missing Drain plug stopper along the bottom of the car or a bad door or trunk seal. I had this problem with a Chrysler once. Turned out to be a Drain plug in the trunk area being missing.

AC stopped working and not responding to controls on a 1997 528i BMW

You might want to check the outside ambient temperature sensor, located in the right front wheel well, when these become damaged, the dash temp reading might say somewhere around -44degF if this is the case replace the sensor and things should be okay.

Passenger window is off track

Bmw states to disconnect the battery before disconnecting any airbag system. Just take off the negative side and wait 5 minutes for the system to discharge. There are 3 10mm bolts holding the side airbag in place. Pop out the plug connector with a small screwdriver and your good to go. Also be careful when peeling back the grey door membrane. It keeps the water from entering the inside of the vehicle when it rains or during a car wash. If it tears when removing replacement is reccomended or water could leak in and soak your carpet. Leaves a nasty smell.
