Question about 1989 Chevrolet Camaro

1 Answer

My 89 Camaro has sat through the winter, and now after getting it started and "freshend" up, I am having major problems driving it. It idles and goes into gear fine, and the RPMs raise normally when I rev the engine. But when i put it in gear and press the accelorator, the RPMs don't hardly raise, or not even at all. When trying to drive on an incline, the car comes to almost a complete stalled stop with the gas pedal pressed to the floor. Again if I let off and just let it idle, or get the RPMs up to around 1,500 I can get the slightest bit of pull. I had to drive almost 2 miles like this. It seems to do it when the car is warmed up more so than when it has just been started. Any help?

If you car has been sitting for that long of a period it may have water in the gas. Water is heavier then gas and will block your fuel filter which will cause you to loss power because of lack of fuel, as the water runs down/off the filter it always gas through then will block it again. Try some stp fuel treatment, read bottle to make sure it drys up water in the gas. Add some more gas after emptying the fuel treatment to your gas. problem should clear up.

I have a 1998 holden jackaroo SE automatic petrol car and it starts, reverse but when u put it in drive it doesn't drive if you press on the winter drive it goes so what's causing the problem?

Get a trained person to check the transmission. If it goes backwards but only goes forward in winter mode then there is a trans fault because auto's generally pull away in 2nd gear in winter mode to reduce wheelspin.

89 camaro rs 350. been sittin for 2 years. needs starter fluid to start most times. no muffler on it at all. will that cause it no to crank or to die while sittin at a red light?

most likely has nothing to do with no mufflers. u prob have bigger more obvious problems if u have to use starting fluid to start. how does the engine run while driving, and at idle after warm?

89 camaro starts wont crank when it does wont idle and dies after 3000 rpm when you hold accelerator

Could be a problem with the pickup coil in the bottom of the distributor if equipped. The pickup coil provides the crank signal for the injectors and ignition module.
Did you clear the code and then 53 came back ?
On most models code 53 means the computer or one of the components is getting over 13 volts.

Help I'm confused as heck I have a 89 v6 Camaro it

You can get the battery tested at Autozone,Advance, and Oreilys for free. Later, once you find out if the battery is alright, and if you can get the car started, drive back to one of the stores and get the starter tested on the car. Or you can pull the starter and take it along with the battery and have both benchchecked.

You could have timing issues in the Camaro which would make it hard to turn over. But the v-8 Dodge usually has a gear system in their starters that increases the Torque in the starter drive. This feature can account for the ease of starting the Dodge with the Camaro battery.

Also check your starter Relay in the Camaro. You may be losing Voltage before the juice reaches the starter with a fried Relay.

Hope my solution helps.

How to get oil for twin turbo on a 89 Camaro

You might be able to buy an adapter for the oil filter that is designed for an oil cooler, such as for trucks. The adapter goes between the oil filter and the block.

Hey, First off, whomever receives this, I appreciate the help GREATLY. I own a 92 Camaro RS.Bought it with 80k miles It only has 88k miles, automatic, good cond. I baby it and such, but I'm having one...

Could be a throttle position sensor. idle air control valve or manifold pressure (MAP) sensor. More severe: bad intake gasket or bad catalytic converter. Do you get a check engine light? Have you ran a diagnostic (may well be worth the $50 at the mechanic). For the intake gasket, with motor idling, spray starting fluid around intake (not into throttle body/air intake) but around the outside of the intake manifold. If the engine revs up, try that spot a few times. Revs up=bad gasket sucking air into manifold making all your sensors freak out. Converter check- converter rusty, has holes, dents or you hear rattling of stuff inside it when you shake it with your hands (as much as possible)=bad converter. Back pressure will choke your engine from ehxaust. If converter is bad, most likely muffler is too, as catalyst particals will travel back and plug it up too. I would try the converter and intake check first, then maybe have it analyzed......Good Luck!....Mike

More details for 94 camaro cuts off

if the car drives just fine at normal speeds, and only revs up and down at idle, i'd say idle air control module.

1985 toyota r22 pickup(manual trans.) when i get on freeway and get up to about 45mph, in 3rd gear, the engine starts to bog down and i can not go any faster. it sat for 4 years with gas in tank. I have...

The problem may be the gas that sat in the carburator. Gas goes bad faster in smaller quantities. Have a look inside to see if you have "gummed" up passages, or jets. Don't forget to change the fuel filter.
Good luck. (I have an 89, and it's a great truck, 300k miles on it.)
