Question about 2006 Ford Ranger

Hi there, car started 2 months back with absolutely no power. 100% till 3ooo rpm. ford diagnosed the catalytic converter was blocked. converter was removed but had low down rpm misfire. replaced all 6 plugs and fine for a month. now it has no power, misfires under load and is very heavy on fuel.

Right there is your problem is converter was removed not replaced u cant remove converter on cars no a days be cause the have oxgen sensor before and after the converter when u take out the convertor the post oxgen sensor will always read rich so computer than trys to adjust timing air/fuel ratio etc . and gets stuck in never ending loop

    Ok then, your'e probably right. But why then after the converter was removed she had a miss only up till 3ooo rpm and had plenty power in the upper range, but after the plugs were changed the car was fine for a month. plenty power and no miss. all of a sudden this problem is there and if i drive slowly she is fine but only under load or hard acceleration she misses?

    could be other problems too cant tell u for sure without seeing it myself but my best guess is with o2 sensor not reading right computer going to change air fuel ratio and timing which isnt needed which is causeing plugs to foul out

Sounds like you have cylinder misfires that ruined the
converter & only the converter was replaced.

The last thing you do, is the converter, AFTER you diagnose the systems to find out why it failed

Lincoln mark 8 starts but won't stay running


Yeah... particularly the O2 sensors.. running rich ... weak
and intermittent...

Been there... Ultimately gave up a took mine to dealer.
After floundering around (and seeing I had already been EVERYWHERE they were looking) for two weeks...

They found one of the catalytic converters was collapsing blocking the exhaust... (jobbed it ou to a local muffler shop).

I have still never identified an elegant way to diagnose this issue...

Got to a point where it would not run...

At that point (had I known) I would have liked to try to remove the catalytic converter at the header to see if it would actually run
(CAN'T... one piece)

Liquid wrench, & ear plugs would figure prominently in this process...

ELSE
do look up you muffler & cat prices BEFORE going to an EXHAUST SHOP ($$$$)...

I figure I paid $1700 where a mere $700 would have been pricy
(installed... I bet you can do better).

Using more rpm to maintain speed than before, cat converter and o2 sensor replaced within 6 months but peoblem showed up approx 2 months after r&r of parts, ran fuel treatment of injectors & fuel...


If the RPM is higher at any particular speed than before, the only cause could be that the transmission is slipping. Things like O2 sensors, Catalytic converters, fuel treatments, etc. have absolutely nothing to do with incresed engine (input) speed to axle (output) speed ratios.

2001 Nissan Sentra. Car starts with no power, but after a few restarts, gain power again. Code is PO420.


Hi, P0420 code means a catalytic converter fault.
The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter

Rpm's are high but no torque, was running fine till we had big rainstorm and next day just lacks power... No moisture in distributor cap or the mass airflow sensor. I have heard it may be the catalytic...


if the catalytic converter is plugged,you will have low exhaust output.
The only sure way to tell is to disconnect the cat and see if the power changes.

We took our pick-up to the local Ford Dealership to find out why it was running so rough,especially when it was sitting still. It took 3-trips to the Ford House in one week before they could tell me...


The Ford guys you are going to are absolute morons. The engine light likely indicates misfire(s) codes. maybe catalyst inefficiency, but that would be due to the misfiring. Take it to a decent shop that has been in your area for a long time, tell them to tune it up and diagnose it properly. Ford trucks have a very common problem with bad coil packs and coil pack extensions. I can almost promise you this is your problem. Mention coil packs to the mechanic just to twig his memory and he can check his scanner for which ones are suspect.
