Tip & How-To about Chevrolet Camaro

Camaro Resistor keys, Starting problems.

I fixed my 99 Z28 myself with a 20 cent resistor. Dont let GM fool you into buying a new ignition cylinder or even a new key. If your camaro has a Resistor key at one point most likely before 100,000 miles your gonna turn your key and your security light on your dash is going to flash constantly and your car wont start. If you want a quick fix without all the hassle of changing the ignition cylinder and buying a new key that cost over 100 dollars parts only, labor to install much more, just take a ohm meter measure the ohms on your key. The little black chip at back of key has a metal piece on each side place meter probs on each side, look at ohms. Now go out to radio shack or an electronic wholesale place and buy that ohm resistor you may have to combine some to make the ohms it doesnt have to be exact within 15 ohms is fine. Now remove 4 screws holding bottom plastic cover under dash just below steering column, carefull of trunk release connector. Find a small 2 wire with black connector and a orange sleeve coming from steering column that covers wires almost down to connector, both wires are mostly white and very small, solder the resister across these 2 wires, heat shrink resistor or electrical tape. Bingo your car starts! And you never have to worry about this defect in the ignition cylinder again. If you still want the security feature just put a push button on the resistor across the wires and hide button under the dash. Trust me the new ignition cylinder will do the same thing again in the future, was a bad design on GM on this cylinder, wires move with ignition cylinder and eventually break. Hope this helps and saves money for you Camaro Fans!

1994 Camaro V6, previous owner changed ignition lock, have only one non-resistance key, need second?

If the passlock system has already been bypassed, it will not matter if the key has a resistor or not. The sensor isn't doing anything anyway.

remove security off a 1990 camaro because changed the ignition

One way is to change out the chip from the cars computer. Another way is use a General Motors GM VATS Override Bypass Kit, I'v learned that there is a pre-packaged set of resistors for the 15 GM resistor values I found a place called Sonic Electronix. Sonic here it is: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...+DEI+652T.html
There is also a bit of misinformation on the internet Some tips I've learned when searching out this.
Example: Myth: The standard ignition cylinder lock will not fit or work in place of the vats ignition cylinder lock. Wrong! The standard 1990 camaro cylinder lock fits slightly deeper inside the column, so this takes away your ability to push in the key and turn it backwards for the accessory position. Other than that, it works fine for turning on the ignition.
I hope this helps some.

No spark in my 1992 Chevy Camaro RS 3.1L engine rotates but doesn't engage.

Hi Candie, if you have air, fuel and spark it should run. Getting to the fuel side-"is fuel getting into the engine?" Your ignition may work, your starter may work, fuel pump may work, but if you have an ignition key with a resistor inside it (little silver piece of metal in the plastic of the ignition key) the key, it could be bad and will shut down the fuel injector. It's part of the security system if some idiot tries to break the steering column to steal your car. It won't run.
I have a 92 Z28 with a 350 and I had to get a new ignition with resistor and correct resistor ohm key. About $400.00 bucks but if you search around Z28 forums there are ways to bypass this for less $$ if you want to.
