Noise as you describe almost always involves bad bearings, especially in 5spd boxes. The second gear problem could be worn ring (syncro ring) and/or worn/damaged 1-2 sliding hub. If wear is excessive, it could also have damaged the teeth on the 2nd gear where the hub engages. Only way to know for sure what's going on is to remove, disassemble

This thing cut off my comment! - I was saying...

Only way to know for sure what's going on is to remove, clean, disassemble and inspect the transmission. There's not easy fix for this one. If you don't know how to do this yourself then please be careful in selecting the shop to fix it for you. I recently quit management in a busy transmission shop due to unethical/dishonest treatment of customers. Be diligent in your research.

2006 chevy suburban making a whining noise in reverse only, makes no noise when in neutral rolling backwards

if manual ( not specified) reverse gear is a spur cut gear and will be noisy when engaged
gets worse if the gear has been engaged inadvertently or slashed by mistake as small pieces of the teeth get chipped off and the result is a noisy reverse operation
nothing to worry about til it starts to clunk as you are going in reverse

My 1987 D21 4x4 jumps out of gear on 2nd gear...is it a linkage problem?

Could be a worn or bent shift fork in the tranny preventing the hub and sleeve for 2nd gear from fully engaging. Too, that hub and sleeve could be worn out. If it grinds going into 2nd gear, the synchro for that gear is worn out , which can result in the wearing out of the 1-2 hub/sleeve assembly.

Problem engaging first gear

Sounds like something with pedal to throw- out bearing. Go to a transmission shop they'll check it for free in most cases!

2nd gear drops hard

Dear Madam or Sir,

this is a well known problem with the Audi-transmissions, we do have a lot of failures with them over here in Germany. ;)

There are some software updates available, in many cases this fixed the problem.

Another possibility is a faulty transmission speed sensor, this is causing the hard shift behaviour.

First you should see the dealer to check the transmission control module´s trouble code memory and to check if there is a software update available for your car.

Hi. second gear is hard to engage. Dealer sugested using synthetic oil, which I did, got a bit better, but still hard to engage the 2nd gear. Any ideas???

Yes the Dealers dident want to tell you that the answer to your problem is because only the 1 gear is doing it that the 2nd gear scrinco is no good and binding up and has to be changed
That means gear box out and stripped down and a new 2nd gear SCRINCO fitted as it should be like all other forward gears nice and easy.
But if still under warranty then thats why they dident tell you.. let me know how you go Ron

I have a 2003 vw golf gt tdi 130 6 speed and have lost 1st and 2nd gear. I have checked the cables and they are working fine, the selector is moving but the gears are not engageing.

CHECK CLUTCH CABLE! IF CABLES IS LOOSE YOU COULD HARDLY ENGAGE 1ST AND 2ND GEAR.
IF YOUR CAR IS USING CLUTCH CABLE, ADJUST IT
IF IT USES FLUID, CHECK THE RUBBER CAPS.
