Car died in driveway on steep incline when trying to go from reverse to drive now won't start back

Any chance you are so low on gas that the incline is causing fuel starvation? Another possibility is that the roll over switch was triggered and the fuel pump got shut off as a safety measure. There is usually a reset switch for that, often in the trunk area.

If the incline is too steep, and your fuel levels are low, the gas may not be getting to the pump? Does the same thing happen with a full tank, half tank, etc?

I backed my 1997 explorer into a slightly inclined parking space and left it running when I returned it had shutdown and the check gauges light was on and it will not restart.

If the incline is steep enough, you may have had enough angle on the tank to allow air into the fuel line and it will act like you are out of gas. Try coasting off the incline and starting on flat ground.
