Question about 2003 Kia Rio

1 Answer

03 kia rio, 110k miles, automatic tranny doesn't move in any gear, I hear whining from the trans and its not pumping fluid to the cooler. Is there any hope for an electrical failure or trans computer failure? Or do I need a transmission?

Nope,, u need a reansmission.. kia's are famous for that.. if u pull the stick out u will smell burnt oil,, thats the clutches in the transmission being burnt.. u can get a transmission full kit and rebuild the transmission (my advice) or u can replace it.. i strongly recommend a transmission full kit and a good mechanic..

get the codes first ,as it can be your linkages under the car that is loose from your gear-stick to your gearbox.or it can just be a need for a fluid change .

There is a whining noise and the car will not go into gear now.

Changing the fluid in the manual gearbox will not affect it not moving. If it is a manual transmission then the clutch is defective if it is a automatic gearbox then the transmission has failed and you will need to remove it and have it rebuilt.

03 Kia Rio will not engage into drive when cold (Automatic)

This is a situation of low pressure,as you warm up the vehicle the transmission fluid is warmer which allow the torque convertor to produce pressure to collapse the clutch pack and transfer power for a shift gear, your solution is a torque convertor and a front pump

trans will raise line pressure when cold that will cause hydraulic pump to scream causing that noise, so check your temperature gage and t-stat to make sure its getting up to temperature has intended by manufacture a cold engine will hold gears longer and at hi press until working temp is reached. good luck.

The most common whining noise from that tranny is the transmission pump. Sometimes they have a high pitch whine noise yet nothing wrong its normal. Sometimes its an indication of the pump being over-worked due to a dirty filter or fluid low. Turn engine on and check tranny fluid level. If low add to cold mark on dipstick, check for leaks under vehicle. If fluid appears very black or burnt smell, recommend flushing fluid and replacing filter (located inside tranny pan) yours will be a 4L60E type tranny.

it either blew the trans or more likely there is not fluid left in it. look for a huge leak such as a cooler line or front seal leak. that whine is bad,its the hydro pump in the trans burning up, dont slip the trans! itll take about 30 seconds of that and its fried

Trans still wont engage

If there is no fluid when you take off one of the lines (check both: the cooler might be plugged) while the engine is running, and there is fluid in the trans, then you have a bad pump inside the trans, or the valve body fell off. Either way, it's probably not going to engage. Ever.
