Well you could have as much as $1000.00 into fixing the head gasket, could be the head gasket, could be a cracked head. If the head is ok, you'll probably want to have a valve job done. If the car is in good shape and doesn't have alot of miles, it maybe worth it. I would definitely evaluate the rest of the car, before buying.

Losing coolant but no leaks on my BMW 5 series 528i. , 2000 model

Look in the radiator for the presence of oil or bubbles. See if water is dripping from the tail pipe. All these indicate the engine is burning the coolant. Look for a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

First, replace the radiator or expansion tank cap.
Also excessive steam and the smell of burnt anti-freeze are a sign of a blown head gasket, as is water in the crank case.

Bmw 5 series 1998 (R) 523i water problem temp gauge hit red water coming out of radiator upon inspection every water pipe was rock solid of pressure !!!!! (PLEASE HELP)

you wont like me if i do? oh well nobody like me anyhow!
if the water jaket built up this much presher its likley to be a stuck thermostat or a blown head gasket,,,,to test for this,, have a "sniffer test" done they take some water out the water jaket and test it to see if it has any hydrocarbons in it,, if it has then its the head gasket poped or a cracked head!
this test takes no longer than 30 seconds to do,,,even stoping for tea!
if you fit a new thermostat first,,,, blead the air out the water jaket as well ,,,,,,,then if it boiles up,,,,its the head gasket?
see,,,you hate me now!!!! dont yer?

  • SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED A HEAD JOB. CRACKED HEAD OR NEED A HEAD GASKET. CHECK YOUR ENGINE OIL IF IT HAS WATER IN IT OR IF WATER IS LEAKING OUT OF TAIL MUFFLER ITS A CRACKED HEAD. IF NOT ITS HEAD GASKET. ANOTHER THING WHICH COULD BE IS FIRST MAKE SURE THAT THE WATER PUMP IS NOT LEAKING WATER CUZ IF IT IS THEN IT WILL BE THAT. SOMETIMES RUNNING YOUR VEHICLE WITH A BROKE WATER PUMP HEATS UP ENGINE CAUSING HEADS TO CRACK WHEN FILLING WITH WATER BUT USUALLY THE HEAD GASKET GOES FIRST. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Thinking about buying a 1994 BMW 320i because i've always wanted a BMW, although the head gasket is completely blown and undriveable. What are the chances of me finding a mechanic to do the job on such an...

head gasket repairs will cost you thousands 2 at the least as it involves stripping down half your engine, if the engine starts and you can run the car for more than 40 mins you are in luck, there is this stuff called SEAL UP i think the brand is CARGO you pour it in your radiator and it chemically welds your head gaskets and other cracks back together and lasts for ages and actually works brilliantly assuming the crack isn't to big used it on my car last nite as i had blown head gasket and it runs great now

I have a BMW 2000 316 Ci that has been using a lot of water. My mechanic had it at the weekend and replaced a hose near the head gasket but it still has the same problem, it however is not overheating

have coolant system pressure test.what they do is pressurize your coolant.about 14 psi look in radiator for bubbles if so you have head gasket leak. or they drain oil out leave drain plug out to see if coolant come out crank case.that also means leaking head gasket or intake gasket.they will look for leaks around radiator +all hoses.look at water pump gasket weep hole.for leaks also check engine core plugs for leaks.they will make sure you have 50% coolant and 50% water .if you have too much water.it will evaporate away.

Starting problem

Sounds like the garage didn't do something correctly.

Apparently heads are a serious problem for BMW.

http://www.usautoparts.net/bmw/parts/bmw-head-gasket-world.htm

Here's a brief history and an unofficial description of BMW's position on their head problems:

http://www.unofficialbmw.com/all/engine/all_m42_profile_gasket_faq.html

Here's a step-by-step on the Timing Case ProfileGasket (aka, the head gasket) replacement for reference so you can see what should have been done:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-17-Head-Gasket/101-Projects-17-Head-Gasket.htm

However, the good news is that the difficulty starting and the fuel leak may be just the result of a clumsy re-assembly in fuel delivery bar. Check out:

http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/285535-fixed-head-gasket-but-now-have-fuel-leak.html

Now doesn't replacing a few O-rings sound better than having to tear the head off again? :-)
