Sometimes it starts, sometimes it just makes a click sound. can't seem to locate the starter to see if it's just a loose cable.

If you follow the positive battery cable it will end at the starter,
that you already know. Has to be at the back of engine
just before the trans

The clicking is a bad starter solenoid, not necessarily
the starter itself, assuming the battery is okey & cables
clean & tight

I loaned a car to a friend who neglected to start it all winter, now it won't start or jump. Am I right in assuming this is a problem that can be fixed by replacing the battery, and if so what size battery...

The battery probably is gone. For a battery? Take your old battery to a place that sells batteries and they will duplicate it for you. Good luck

Altanator keeps dieing.

A fresh charged battery does not mean it is a good battery. The battery is working the alternator to death, replace it,it has a bad cell,or the amps are to low,and has a short in it.The alternator senses the battery is in bad need off charge, and puts all out until the alternator has nothing left,This is the most likely cause of this problem. Also be sure the battery cable ends are shiny clean when replacing the battery.

Where is the Alternator on a 1997 Mazda Protege

It rides on a belt to spin it so you should be able to find it. Follow your positve cable to engine. Don't follow cable to starter.

Car won't crank & makes a clicking noise when ignition is turned.

test battery voltage , should be 12 volts, also check battery amp draw when you attempt to start engine, you should have 12 volts at the starter solenoid , you could have a faulty starter motor, battery cables and or terminals... even with a good battery check for vltage drop from battery positive post to battery positve at solenoid ... large drop equals bad cable, replace ... just points to check....

My 4runner wont start. it clicks once but wont crank or turnover. battery is new and starter was replaced less than a year ago.

You will need a meter or a test light to check the starter. You will have a big wire cable going from the battery to the starter that always has 12 volts positve at it. The smaller wire will have 12 positive when the ignition key is turned to "start." If you have both of these at the starter, your starter is bad.
