Question about Toyota Tercel

1 Answer

Toyota Tercel 92. Manual Transmission. With new starter assembly just put on. Starts fine, engine runs excellent, but it still does the hard clunk like it did before I switched starter. It only does it when the engine sits for 10-15 min. (Never after a quick stop) It even drags a little longer then the one single hard clunk. What's the deal with that? Also there's a noise that follows - moderate vibration - when I engage the engine in first and second gear. It use to happen only in first gear. The clutch isn't sticky or it doesn't seems that the flywheel is warped or missing teethes. Could that possibly be the engine mount? How many engine mount are there to replace? Would this be hard to replace?

Thanks Saailer. 4 thumbs up! Is the stiffing plate part of the motor mount or where is it located? Where's the rear motor mount located? Do I necessarily need to change both rear and front motor mounts or just the front should do? Thanks again.

Hello! I suspect you have a resistive connection to the starter motor...Place a voltmeter across the positive of the battery and the positive connection on the starter motor...Since it appears to fail when hot take the reading at that time...You should read less that .5 volts...Set the meter on X1 ohm scale...Read from the negative of the battery to chassis and negative of battery to engine block...Both should read zero ohms...

I agree that the motor mount (engine mounting absorber) is at fault...there are 2 (front and rear) about $50 each ...Also there is a stiffing plate (2 bolts to engine, 1 to frame) that could be broken...Not hard to change...

Hello! The front mount connects to the cross member...Pull it and inspect...This is the one that breaks most often as vehicle ages...stiffing plate is not part of the mount... A rectangle shape with 2 bolts on engine and 1 bolt on trans-axle housing..........Saailer

Dear Crystal,
I think your Tercel has a manual transmission, also called a standard transmission.
If so, raise the hood of the car and look for the "clutch master cylinder".
To see what that looks like, go the the "e-bay" web-site and type in "1992 Tercel clutch master cylinder".
Check the fluid level. (It takes brake fluid if it is empty.)
If it is empty, you have probably the need to change the "slave cylinder" on the transmission bell housing.
God bless your efforts.

1992 toyota tercell wont start, will push start on 2nd gear. please help

Does the engine turn over at all when you try to start it?

Check the wires going to your starter solenoid to make sure everything is secure. If all wires are secure, remove the starter and take it to Autozone to get the starter and solenoid tested.

Your starter or solenoid is probably bad.

I also have a 92 tercel. The starter is on the back side of the engine/transmission near the firewall.

I think two 15mm screws hold it on. And its easier to get to and remove from the drivers side of the engine. Remove the duct going to the intake manifold and the air cleaner assembly(the plastic thing that the air filter is inside) to be able to pull it out more easily. And unplug the sensor on the back of the air cleaner housing. After you pull out the air filter, there are 3 screws that hold the air filter housing on. On the very bottom of the filter housing.

Transmission won't engage in Toyota Tercel

pop off the cap on your clutch reservoir, if it's empty fill it up, leave the cap off, and then pump the clutch 20 times to try to get air out, that should work.

What kind of starter does a 1993 Toyota Tercel 1.5 engine take

That is a problem with some vehicle parts, and about the only way to know for sure is to look for a part # or name on the starter itself, otherwise you have to hope they stock the one you need. Yes I see one is direct drive, and the other is gear reduction. May I suggest, if you can't take it off & get in for another, try to get a clear digital camera picture of it, print it off & take it to parts store for them to compare to the picture they have.
