A/c restriction, how much to fix it? Got a mechanic here going to charge me $835 and telling me what a deal it is, because he has to take out my entire dash board and put it back in. There is a restriction in the a/c, compressor is fine.

Most blockages in the a/c are caused by the filter sock becoming clogged with compressor wear fragments. I am not familiar with the the Corolla layout but on most cars the filter sock is located under the hood in the pipe leading from the front condensing cooling radiator. Toyota are not crazy enough to hide this designed constriction in a place that is so inaccessible like deep under the dash. The only reason for getting behind the dash on most cars is to fix a leak to the a/c 'evaporator' unit. I would look seriously to get a second and third opinion.

    Laura,
BoneeBone's advice is right on the money. The biggest job here is having the system emptied and refilled with freon and many places do this very cheaply. Once emptied the expansion valve can be cleaned out to get it working again, saving some more dollars. Before having the system refilled ensure that a few drops of light oil are added, generally when freon escapes it takes some of the internal circulating lubricant with it.

What does he mean by restriction? What is restricted. everything for the A/C is in the engine compartment, ask him what part is restricted?

He said the restriction is in the expansion valve. The compressor works, when my ex went to put more Freon in it, it would make an electronic fart noise and spit out mist...mechanic said compressor was doing what it should, it had freon, it was just plugged up (restricted) somewhere. Cost me $40 for him to find the restriction, which I take is a good deal, but the $835 to rip out my dash to un restrict this problem seems a bit harsh!

  • Boneebone Jun 01, 2010

Yes it does seen very harsh, the Expansion Valve is located inside the Evaporator which is behing the glovebox, all you need to do is remove the glovebox, disconnect the Evaporator, take apart the Evaporator (it should be in two halves and inside the Evaporator you will find the Expansion Valve. It is not very labor intensive, I would get a few more quotes or if you have a friend that is Mechhanically Inclined have them help you. The part is not very expensive and it is about 5 inches long. here is a picture of one.

My A/C has been fixed, doesn't work. Only works at high speeds. New Compressor did NOT fix it,new Expansion Valve, didn't fix it. Getting Replacement Compressor.

I have known some very good mechanics that weren't so hot when it comes to A/C. It sounds like you have replaced just about everything except the evaporator, I hope that isn't it. It sounds like a restriction somewhere, or maybe that compressor you are replacing again. BUT... The actual charge on the refrigerant is very critical. It is very easy to get it undercharged or overcharged unless someone does it that really knows how to do it correctly. It should be evacuated completely, like on a good suction pump overnight, and then carefully charged while monitoring the temperatures at both ends of the refrigeration cycle.

Emissions System warning keeps coming on. Mechanic & muffler shop disagree.

Start with the first mechanic who replaced the battery and have them check the charging system. (Alternator) They should have done this when changing a battery, to rule that out as a problem in the first place. Explain the problems you have been having, as a bad charging system can cause all sorts of electronics problems and have them check the engine codes and have them explain what they are.
You could also go back to the muffler shop and tell them their sensor replacement did not fix the problem and have them correct their work.

When i start the engine is shaking,when i drive,knoking and shaking its lower.for laguna2.2 dci 2003 year

There could be any number of reasons for this.

- when starting, engine shake might not be firing in one of the cylinders or might have an electrical fault.
- when driving, shake might be due to badly inflated tires, badly balanced wheels, damaged CV boots and joints, worn bushings.

In short, you need to get it to an auto mechanic who deals with Renault to tell you what is wrong. You can ask for a quote to fix it but you don't have to proceed.

You take what you've been told to several other mechanics and tell them what you've been told and ask them how much to fix it.

Good luck.

How do i find out where kennygose locale is. i called all day today and no mechanic will offer me his deal about"if i cant fix your car i wont charge you " something like that. maybe if he diagnoses wrong...

Watch your television. The commercial will eventually run again. Have a piece of paper with pen ready to jot down the number, before you discuss repairs, ask them "where are you located".

Throttle position sensor

not a knowledgeable mechanic and he doesn't want your business by charging well over the retail price
he will not acknowledge any workmanship failures so going back will be frustrating and futile
you could get legal advice and if he did agree to fix it for nothing , he could not be trusted
even though it hurts , I would suggest that you take it to an accredited service center and have the problem properly diagnosed and quoted

The mechanic said he can't get it to show up on the computer

Jeeps, Chryslers, and Dodges are notorious for having a bad ignition fuse causing the mechanic to not be able to read the diagnostic trouble codes. If this mechanic gave you the car back and didn't attempt to fix this I would find a new mechanic.

My check engine light would go on when climbing steep inclines. Car then stalled one day and mechanic said I needed a fuel pump of which he replaced (costly). After 90 miles driving, the check engine light...

When check engine lights come on, the one thing you don't want to do is go to a mechanic. Go to somewhere like autozone, where they pull the codes for free and tell you what the problem actually is, instead of what they feel like charging you for. Go get the code pulled and that will tell you what the problem is. Then you can either fix it yourself or have someone else fix it

I think my mechanic is over charging me..

It's good to shop around for new tires, the mechanic may not have a good deal from the supplier. Therefore, he needs to charge more. Just shop around in your area for better deals on tires.

As for the other repairs, the first thing you'll need to get done is the front lower control arm ( the worn ball joint ). Worn out suspension parts will cause premature wear on the tires. Because, it would not be holding the tire steady and it would be basically " out of alignment ".
If I remember correctly, the whole control arm would have to be replaced, because the ball joint isn't changeable in the control arm. I believe that's why he's asking $700.
The mechanic again probably doesn't have a good deal on his parts supplier. I think it's too high myself. I would call around other shop for better prices. Other shops that have better deals on their suppliers will usually pass the saving to the customer.
