I have 99 chev pu 4.3 just put new head gaskets on .now I can not get the timing cam retard off -22.whats wrong.everything was set at top dead center.dist lines up on mark 6 inside it. Help

the book shows chev 4.3 L is a v6 chain driven and the valve timing is correct when the two dots line up with each other
if it is the ignition timing that you are talking about you are probably 180 degrees out in the distributor setting
no 1 piston firing lines the rotor button up at no one HT lead and not no 6
all engines regardless are timed of no piston tdc and chev engines are around the 12 degrees btdc for operation

Timing mark on pully

the timing marks are on the timing cover housing at the top of the crankshaft or just slightly to the right . They are a series of raised marks going from TDC to 5-10 degrees advanced (BTDC)or 5-10 degrees retarded ATDC. The timing mark is a small groove in the inner flange of the pulley. Slowly turn the crank until you see/feel it . For better observations with the light paint the groove with white paint.

Turns over but doesn't start , getting gas from tank but no spark

I had an old chev cavalier that had a similar problem. I loosened the distributor, retarded the timing, and it would start! Before I could drive it, I had to return the distributor to it's original position. I eventually took it to the dealer and they said I wasn't getting a spark. I showed the mechanic how to start it and it turned out that it was the ignition coil. Replaced it and it ran perfectly.

96 Chev Silverado having to crank 3 - 4 times before start

take an ohm meter reading on your spark plug outputs between the three coils (if this has that type) big difference replace it and maybe the controller also.

Yes, take it back. The might of replaced the Egr valve to turn off the light. Don't let them charge you for retesting it, that's why you took it in in the first place.
