Question about 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Poor idle and stalling td4 freelander

I have a 2005 td4 freelander which has developed needs to revved to prevent it stalling. Sent it to local landrover specialist who could not initially diagnose the problem, eventually changed no 3 3 injector but this has only part solved the problem. Mechanic not sure what the problem is and thinks it's an underlying electrical problem but states I will have to do lots more diagnositics and trial and error replacement including a new ECU. Although love car seems a bit expensive, have heard it could just be a dirty EGR valve. Any suggestions and how do I clean the EGR valve?

It is actually hard to say without actually seeing the vehicle, but the target speed for your engine idle is around 750 RPM. The stalling after revving kind of depends on how high you are revving it and whether the engine is at operating temperature or not. This may be normal. Then again, it could be that the Idle Air Control (IAC) is not working properly.

The shifting from first to second at 4000 RPM sounds like a completely separate problem. This could be due to low transmission fluid level, sticking shift control solenoids, or possibly even a malfunctioning Vehicle Speed Sensor.

If the Check Engine light is on, have that checked first.

My td4 freelander 2001. wont accelerate when i try to speed

I Had this simalar proble with my 2002 TD4 this was caused by stuck tubo vanes and a replacement turbo was required, But the cause of this is a small oil filter *(size of a cotton reel) situated near the injectors in a plastic housing that gets oil saturated and then passes oil throught to the turbo and burns (you can also get a slight sweet smell out of the exghaust at tick over when hot)

Oil coming out of gearbox apparently on 05 freelander td4. do I require a new gearbox or can this be fixed?

That depends from where the leak is coming: it can be as simple as an loose drain plug, could get worse if it's a worn seal or can be terminal if the gearbox's case is fissured. Put the SUV on stands, clean the gearbox, start the engine at idle, put it into a gear (3 or 4 will do) and look from where the oil is coming.
